O- Blood Needed!!!!

I just got this e-mail and I figured I'd pass it on if anyone knows of anyone who may be able to help!

The former administrator for our law firm has multiple myeloma.  She recently went on another round of chemo therapy, which has almost completely depleted her blood.  Because of a previous reaction to various antigens in the blood, the O- blood must come from someone who has not previously received blood products and has never given birth.

If anyone has O- blood type or knows anyone who does and also meets the above criteria, please let me know right away.  I will provide the information needed to make sure the blood gets to the proper bank.

Thank you for your assistance and spreading the word.

E-mail or PM me and I'll send you the contact info.

THANKS!

    Same here.

We could be blood sisters!  Isn't O- blood the rarest?  Or is that O+?  I think one of them is....

So if you ever need blood from an O- girl who has given birth, let me know!

  • Thanks ladies! Maybe pass the word around if you can (and don't mind). I'm pretty sure O- is the rarest and the universal. DH is O- but he just had tattoo work done! Sad
  • Ok, clearly I don't know what I am talking about......

AB- is the rarest blood type.  Only 0.7% of the population is AB-

O- blood can only receive O- blood.  I guess that's what I was thinking of?

  • I'm glad giving birth isn't his reason not to donate.  ;)

duh! lol, I feel stupid now too Embarrassed I think the O- needing only O- blood and it being the universal donor blood makes us think it's rarer than it is Stick out tongue

    Ha, me too!

  • AB
People with Blood type AB negative (1/2% of the population) and AB positive are potential universal plasma donors. This means plasma can be transfused to people having all Blood types.
    AB +
People with Blood type AB positive comprise 3-1/2% of the population. People with this type of Blood are universal recipients. This means that they can be transfused with any type of Blood in emergency situations.
Facts about Blood Types with charts about Blood Types and Blood type informationO +
O positive donors are needed more frequently than any other donor. Because O positive is the most common Blood type (39% of the population), it is needed more often by people requiring Blood in hospitals.
Facts about Blood Types with charts about Blood Types and Blood type informationO -
7% of the population has O negative Blood. People with O negative donors are potential universal red Blood cell donors. This means that their red Blood cells can be transfused to patients with all types of Blood.

Sorry to sound like a dumb dumb, but why does it matter if you've had a baby or not?

After you've given birth (or been pregnant?)  You're body produces different antigens that don't co-mingle well with others? I'm not 100% clear on the way it works and google is no help.

Thanks.  I'll have to do some googling myself.  I'll let you know if I come up with a better explanation.

Thats funny you don't know! You're Dr. should have it on file!

  • I found out why O neg donors cannot have been pregnant/had babies.....if the baby has a different blood type antigens are produced and will be present in moms body from that point on, and an O neg person would not be able to receive the blood. (I asked, work in dr office).
