Frustrating... wwyd?

Both of DH's parents smoke and their house is not big and it smells AWFUL in there. They had Christmas at their house and they of course don't smoke while we are there, but still when we get home I have to strip down Ellas carseat and all of our clothes and wash them. They have invited us for dinner on Saturday and I really do not want to go because of the odor. Would you suck it up and go and just try to make it quick or would you ask DH to tell them no?

Re: Frustrating... wwyd?

  • I would not go. Would your dh be mad? When dh mom lived in the area she smoked in her house and we never visited one time. I can't stand the smell of smoke and I surely wouldn't my new baby to have to smell it! Isn't it still considered 2nd hand smoke?
  • I would ask them to not smoke around the baby, but I would go and wear washable clothing, coats etc..  You can leave the car seat in the car..

  • my parents both smoke and we go through the same thing.  they don't smoke while we are there, but we always come home with smelly clothes and hair.  we just suck it up and make sure we're home early enough for showers before bed!

  • That's a tough one for me.  The recent findings on "3rd hand" smoke, especially for Ellas tiny lungs, would make me want to avoid taking her over there.   At the same time, I guess she can't live in a bubble, and you don't want to offend or alienate his family over it. (and I can definitely see them overreacting.)

Any chance you could all meet at a restaurant instead?

  • Been there, dealt with that. It sucks.

I would go, leave the carseat in the car and just make sure it's a quick visit.

    This exactly!!!

  • I would absolutely not go. My sister smokes and I used to make her change her clothes before she could hold A, so there is no way I would expose my child or even myself (I has RAD) to a house like that. Ella can't protect herself so, go with your motherly instinct and do what is best for her, not your DH's feelings. I would have them over for dinner if it means that much to your DH.

He is on my side, he really doesn't care. His dad's more of an uncle and less like a dad anyway since his grandparents are the ones who raised him... and he doesn't really care of we offend them.

Solved the problem easily though as I have to work until 6:30 and MIL wanted to do dinner around 4:30 since she goes to bed at like 8 bc she works at 4am during the week.
