Hi,

DH and I are planning a vacation and he is pushing for the RIU Santa Fe in Cabo.  I remember you had stayed there recently and was hoping you could offer some input.  Are there any "must do" things while we are in Cabo?   The resort looks beautiful, but soooo big. How is the location?  We have stayed at the RIU Cancun several years ago and loved it, so this is why he is pusing to stay at that resort.

 TIA.

Re: **Jaye**

  • I was there in October!

    What I Loved:

-My room.  I had only the basic level room and I had a nice big balcony, an ocean view, a gorgeous bathroom, and a comfortable bed.  The room was large and very, very clean.  I really love it there!  My friend's had the nice Suite and it was gorgeous!  Lighting is fabulous, they had a huge soaker tub and it was nicely laid out and decorated.

    - The pools!  Infinity pools, swim up bars, LOTS of pools to choose from, lots of bars to choose from... do I need to go on?  It was a very festive resort and everyone spent the day just chillin' in the pools.

-The food.  The Italian restaurant was AMAZING!  You HAVE to have dinner there at least once.  There were so many yummy options that I wish I'd gone 2-3 times.  We each ordered something different and snuck bites off each other's plates.  The buffet was also very good.  I was disappointed by the steak house, but mostly because I don't eat beef and there was no non-beef option.  I didn't make it to the Asian restaurant.

-The drinks and atmosphere.  I had some of the best shots EVER there.  Ask for the Bob Marley and the Hoochie Coochie.  You won't be disappointed.  I've been to another RIU since then and they didn't know these drinks at all so take advantage of them while you can!  At night everyone would gather around the bar near the stage and the bar tenders would make a bunch of shots and just pass them out to everyone and we'd cheer and joke around.  It was honestly the best nightlife experience I've ever had at a resort!

    What I Didn't Love:

-No room service.  IMO you shouldn't claim you're "All-Inclusive" unless you have room service, darnnit!

-Horrible late-night food options.  This seems to be an issue with all RIU resorts.  The only food option you have after 10PM is a fridge in the Sport's Bar that contains hot dogs and hamburgers that you heat up in the microwave and fruit.  Sometimes they had meat and cheese platters but that was only one night.  Also stale nachos.  Very disappointing especially after getting spoiled by the options available at other resorts.  I'm also a night snacker so this is important for me.

-The resort has the most bizarre layout I've ever seen!  The lobby, restaurants (except the steak house), the only bar that's open at night,  the show stage, and the Sport's Bar are all quite a trek from the main pool/hotel area (the one that creates a horseshoe around the pools like you see in all the pics).  I'd say it's probably close to the equivalent of 4 city blocks.  It's not too bad when you're young and in shape but I saw several elderly guests with walkers going back and forth and I can't imagine how long and tiring that walk was for them.  Also, I had a huge blister on my foot and it was SO ANNOYING!  You also don't want to make the walk only to realize you forgot something in your room so double check that you have everything you want for the night when you go to dinner since you'll probably be in the lobby area for a while.

-No internet in the rooms.  Honestly, not something that would bother me when on vacation but I was working and had to Carbonite up my computer in case something happened to it and the pictures between then and getting home.  Which meant my computer and I had to trek the 4 or so blocks to the lobby with my computer, back-up my computer using the lobby WiFi (the only place you can get it)  and then trek back to my room after to put my computer back.  It wasn't fun.  So, just plan to not go online while there!  It takes way too much time!

If anything in the negatives bothers you at all I'd look into spending a bit more and staying at RIU Palace.  I believe they do have room service and WiFi in the rooms and the lobby and hotel are not separated.   But for the price difference I wouldn't hesitate to stay at RIU Santa Fe again.

The only thing I did in Cabo was take a taxi into town with my friends and just wander around.  We went to The Corner Bar and shared a giant margarita.  It was HUGE and costs about $80 US but makes for great pictures and it was very yummy!  8 of us shared it and we all got drunk from it so plan to get it only if you can share it.  They take your picture and put it up on the wall if you can finish it so look for a picture of me if you go there!  Then we went to lunch at Cabo Cantina and I had the best Fish Taco I've ever had!  Cabo Wabo was crazy when we were there because Sammy Hagar was playing a live show for his birthday so I didn't make it there but I hear it's the place to go at night.

Oh, and you have to head out to Lover's Beach for a half day.  It's a beautiful spot, very relaxing.  I didn't do it but I hear the snorkeling over that way is really nice, too.

  • Jaye, this is sooo helpful!  Thanks so much.  Sounds like a great place.  It's at the top of our list!  Thanks again!!
