How was your appointment yesterday? Were they able to fit you guys in?

Re: Dawg

  • Yes, it went well.  Tony didn't say anything akward or out of place.  He usually makes sexual remarks when he's uncomfortable but in the fertility clinic that appears to be the subject anyway, so he fit right in.

One thing that I did side eye, is the Dr. first wanted to just focus on me and assumed that I was the issue.  I had to tell him that Tony had a Kidney Transplant.  Then he decided to have Tony get SA.   I kinda felt like he didn't ask us enough questions.  I'm skepitcal about this Dr. because I have recieved both Glowing and not so glowing feedback from some girls on the San Diego board.

So now I just wait for my period to start and then the testing begins.  Tony gets to drive his sample down next week and seems to find great humor in his part of the testing process.

    Thank you for asking.

  • Did you fill out a questionnaire before you went?  We had about 50 pages of questions to answer before our first appointment, then a long meeting with the RE to go over everything.

I'm surprised they didn't order an SA first.

    Good luck with everything!

  • That's really annoying that the doc assumed you were the problem.  I hope he's better at being a doctor than he is with bedside manner.

  • No Kay, and that concerns me.  I had to tell him about our history and the fact that my cycles are like clockwork and what not.  He didn't ask.  He just brought in a little sheet that basically showed that we should have been trying for a kid when I was 35 not 37 and that he's glad we came in now instead of waiting any longer.

I felt like I was giving him answers before he asked them and that he may not have even asked.  He also didn't seemed to concerned about Tony's medications and that surprised me.  Maybe he just figures the testing would give the most clear picture.

But yeah, I have some concerns even though they are ranked very high in San Diego.

  • I think that would concern me too. I hope the next appointment goes better.

Where are they in San Diego? If you guys are down here often we should try to meet up for lunch or something. Lunch with me will take the edge off invasive testing.

  • I just looked back at our q'airre and it was only 9 pages, but it felt like 50!  They wanted to know things like what age I was when I first got hair under my arms.

I hope you're able to feel more comfortable with the doctor as you move along.

  • Noisy, it's off the 56 and El Camino Real.  I thought of you yesterday and yes, we go back next month to review everything and I will let you know what time so we can meet for lunch.  But you are required to bring Will and Eve :)

  • Dawg, when I was looking at REs, my sister-in-law (who's an OB and has also done IVF) advised me to look at their stats on the CDC website. The 2008 stats just came out (they take a long time to upload).

She told me to look at the percentage of multiples per IVF cycle because that is an indicator of how responsible and RE is. Someone who has a high percentage of twins or triplets is considered irresponsible. I looked up my friend's clinic in AZ (she never had a live birth) and their stats looked good until you see that 50% of their patients had twins. YIKES.

The percentage of live births per transfer is considered a good indicator of a successful doctor. As a frame of reference, my RE is at a very reputable clinic and his percentage for women my age (35-37) is 47%. You could compare clinics in your area to see if there is one that might be a little better.

I didn't have to fill out a questionairre, but I had been referred to my RE by my OB, and I had lots and lots of records with her. My first meeting with my RE I really felt like he had read up on my case and had done his homework. It really put me at ease, and you certainly deserve that.

  • Oh Thank you Lisa!  At first glance they are in line with the others in the area. There looks like there is one place a little closer to us that has better numbers, so I may look into that.

If I was willing to drive to Beverly Hills and pay one million dollars the sucess rate would be about 50%.

  • Doesn't the success rate just kill you! If it makes you feel better, the success rate obviously changes based on your specific issue and situation. So, if you're not as severe a case, it may go up to 60%.
