Ring appraisals and repairs....

The insurance on my ring has expired so it?s time for a new appraisal. I went to one place and they wanted to charge me $265 for just my e-ring with a 3 day turn around. Same day would have been an additional $35 plus they started spouting out repairs that needed to be done. It was like dealing with car repairs. I feel taken advantage of. This was a private jeweler by the way.

What do you think is a reasonable price? I called Jared and they have an appraisal show coming up and charge $135 per piece and do it in 20 minutes in front of you but if I really do need the repairs, and I'm sure I do, I don't want to wait that long.

Kristen- If you read this... can you recommend a place?

My jeweler does it while I wait... for free. Be VERY wary of ever leaving your ring with a jeweler, especially one you don't already know and trust. They've been known to steal the stones and replace them with lesser or even fake ones.

I know. It scares the crap out of me. Aaron was a dumb ass and got my ring from a private jeweler in St Loius so I don't get any of the free benefits with continuing to use them. IDIOT!!!

Well, Eric got mine from a private jeweler in the diamond district in Manhattan, and when I took it to another private guy in Paramus, NJ who my parents have used to get a second opinion appraisal, it was still free. Does anyone in your family have a "family jeweler"?

Yes. But we dont have any family here. If my center stone and one of the side ones werent so lose I would just wait until we got to MN but I need to get it taken care of ASAP.

You didn't get an appraisal when you got your ring?  I thought all places included them.

 

Did you put your ring on your homeowners insurance?  My insurance is super cheap for my ring under homeowners.

I was wondering, too. Mine's under my renter's insurance as an extra jewelry policy.

We also added it to our home owners policy, no appraisal needed.

It was on our rentals insurance with the original appraisal from when we bought it. Now that we own we have different home owners insurance and they are requiring a new appraisal...

That's really lame! The only plus would be if your ring is gold, gold is so high right now that the value will have increased.

Because my ring appraised above $5K, USAA required a second appraisal.

Either way, you should never have to pay for an appraisal.

That seems crazy to pay for an appraisal! Anyhow, I use my family jeweler in South FL. Sorry  I hope you find a good one around here! Do you have any coworkers that you can ask? I tend to stay away from the chain jewelers. I found this if it helps....
