Gift Ideas

So I have a friend who is expecting and has decided not to find out the sex of her baby. I'm all for that, but the problem is that now I'm not sure of what to get her. I don't want to only get her a gift card because I feel that's pretty impersonal. But I don't know what to get her that isn't too pricey but that she'd like. Any ideas?

Re: Gift Ideas

  • Did she register for gifts? When in doubt, I always go for the registry.

I've recently done baby bath baskets, which the moms really seem to like. They included baby wash, lotions, powder, butt paste, bath books or toys, and a hooded towel (yellow ducks are always good for "gender neutral").

    Photobucket
  • A gift certificate for a massage or a new born/maternity photo session - I'm not all for gift cards/certificates either, but this is more personal than just a Target gc.

Is she decorating the nursery?  What is the theme?  Do something along those lines.  There are lots of gender neutral items out there.

What about a set of classic childrens books?  I still have the one (Richard Scary) that my godfather gave me (he signed the inside cover, which I think is neat).

Anything off of her registry - even if it is basic and seemingly mundane.  I can tell you as a pg woman, when I get those things then I know I can put my money in other places and it is greatly appreciated.

  • I always do a classic children's book.Sometime with a gift, sometimes with a gift card.

PJs and toys are usually gender neutral. I've also just gotten a couple sets of plain white onsies with neutral pants - can't go wrong with extra clothes

This.  I buy from registries 99% of the time.  When I don't, it's usually practical stuff like SBS suggested.

  • Believe it or not, lots of expectant parents really don't want a lot of gender specific pink or blue crap. Get a pack of onesies in basic white - I promise you that most new moms will be very appreciative of such a gift. GIft cards are great for diapers.

  • Hit the registry.  If there isn't one: a bathtub/basket full of any combination of soap, lotion, wipes, a small pack of diapers, tylenol, mylicon, white onesies, a lullaby CD, gift card, book, washclothes, diaper cream (pinxav specifically).

The clothes are cute and all, but let me tell you the practical stufff is the good stuff.  I also try to put in a little something for the mom- nice socks, thick lotion (non-scented), a fancy soap.
