The Great Gatsby

I've finished my first book of 2011 which was "Safe Haven" by Nicholas Sparks (my favorite author).  In thinking what to read next, Jason suggested I read The Great Gatsby which is his 'favorite' book.  This is coming from a guy who hates to read and I'm pretty sure he never even read it but just uses it as his 'favorite' book for conversation lol.  Anyway, I figured I'd humor him and give it a try since we already own it.  I had to read this book in highschool but I think I just read the cliff notes because I don't really remember it.  I'm only about 30 pages in and already want to toss it into the 'no thanks' pile; I just can't seem to get into it. 

Has anyone else out there read it?  If so, what'd you think?  Did it take you a while to get into it?

I have never read it, but I just had to say that saying The Great Gatsby is your favorite book even though you've never read it, is way more fun than saying, "The Bible" as your go-to that you've never even read.  LOL

Everytime I see that answer on someone's survey (re: Playboy - LMAO) I always think, "Oh, that person's never actually read a book."  lol

ETA:  No offense if your actual favorite book is The Bible.

I seem to recall taking a while to get into it...but in the end I did like it.

It's my mom's favorite book. It's pretty short and pretty good.

I never had to read it, but I did watch the tv-movie version with Paul Rudd a long time ago. I found most of the characters totally insufferable, yet wanted to hang out with them all at the same time.

It's got to be better than Catcher in the Rye - I would rather put pins in my eyes than read that again. Holden Caulfield is a twatwaffle.

I read it back in High school, but I though it was alright. Its certainly not a book I'd go back and read again.

I never read it.  If you're looking for classics that are interesting: The Count of Monte Cristo, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Through the Looking Glass, and Beowulf.

ETA: I'm currently reading America's War on Sex right now  for my Human Sexuality class.
