MH is looking into a few different schools for PhD work, and right now Notre Dame is one of our front-runners - but we are very early in the process. He finishes his Masters this spring and plans to take a year off prior to PhD, so we're looking at fall 2012 enrollment.
We are looking at visiting ND sometime this spring and I'm looking for any advice or words of wisdom from anyone in the area. Things to be sure to do/see, where to stay, etc. Also looking for any words of wisdom from ND alums, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Re: visiting Notre Dame
I don't have any good Notre Dame specific info, but I grew up near there so I will gladly share what I know about South Bend.
South Bend is a smallish-city. It conjoins with Mishewalka. Both have little downtowns, decent schools, good cost of living, etc. Mishalwalka has a bit more of a "yuppy vibe" with more strip malls, nice restaurants, the big mall.
South Bend is a two hour drive or train ride from Chicago, so if you crave a huge city, it is not out of reach. Notre Dames campus is really near "the tollroad" as we call it, or I 80-90. If ND is not putting you up somewhere, I personally would suggest staying in downtown SBend, or in the new hotels right off the interstate.
Currently in downtown S Bend there is the college football hall of fame, but I believe it is relocating to a different city, possibly before you would come to visit.
Another nice thing about being in South Bend would be proximity to Southwest Michigan--lake michigan has a ton of cute resort towns that boom in the summer. there are also great wineries, bed and breakfasts, etc. that would be fun day trips.
In my opinion you will find that people are very passionate about the university--they either love it or hate it. I find it rare that you find someone who has no opinion.
I think there are some ladies who lurk a bit on this board and my be able to share more info about schools, neighborhoods, etc. Sorry I don't really have any insight into those things.
Hopefully what I could share is helpful! I hope you enjoy your visit/time in South Bend!
2001 Alum here.
There are tons of hotels to choose from near ND, I think there's a new Hampton that people liked this football season, my family lives pretty close and we just stay with them. Spring is a good time to visit so long as you are no where near graduation weekend.
Macri's and the Vine are two of my favorite restuarants, pizza at Bruno's.
I agree that people either love it or hate it. I love it there and love going back.
There's graduate housing available but there's also tons of apartments and houses for rent nearby at decent prices.
Hey there! I grew up in Mishawaka/South Bend area! I was reading a post that said eat at Macri's which is totally awesome except that its no longer there! My favorite breakfast place is call Macadoo's! Its awesome! Both of my parents still live there are pretty close to ND only 10-15 minutes away and in a great neighborohood near Ironwood Rd. The Granger area is definitely something to check out (think near University Park Mall) but be prepared for traffic! They have really updated the mall since the last time I was out there so I'm not all sure whats out there. South Bend/Mishawaka has a ton of variety in terms of food, they have just about any restaurant that you could want to go do. I agree with the South Michigan thing. MH and I just went skiing in swiss valley a small ski place in Jones, MI which is only 45 minutes away! One thing that I always loved to go to was Arts around the Bend? I'm not sure on the exact name but all of the local area artists put out there stuff on display in downtown South Bend and you can walk around and look at everything, its in march or april. Also the South Shore train goes from SB to Chicago! If you're a shopper, its only 45 min- 1 hr to Michigan City, IN where there is the outlet mall and beach! Yay Summer!
Hope some of this helps!

This isn't true. I was referring to the original, not the sports bar location:

Hi there! Congrats on your pregnancy and I have to agree with what another poster said, it's a great area to raise a family! My husband and I live in Granger which is a suburb of South Bend. The city of South Bend is more on the larger side with Granger, Mishawaka, Elkhart and Osceola as nearby communities. I do wish there was more of a cultural offering in this area but we do okay : ) There are tons of stores and we have some nice museums and the Morris Civic Theater where we get some nice concerts/shows.
If you are coming for a visit, I would definitely make sure to check out all the local areas. Notre Dame does have a lot of student housing nearby campus but with a family, you might prefer to be in a nearby location. Ivy Court Inn and Suites is located right next to campus and might be a good place to stay when you come into town. If you're looking for anything else specifically, feel free to ask. Good luck!
