Powder laundry detergent & HE washers

Has anyone use a powdered laundry detergent in there high efficiency washer? if yes it was at home made and what recipe did you use or what why did you purchase? DH and I are looking to buy a house. When we went to a appliance store, the rep recommended powdered laundry detergent. They that is better for high efficiency washers than liquid detergent. We just started using Ecos and we love it but we want to be sure that word using the right stuff for the washer. So I guess I should also ask does anyone have a high efficiency washer and are using liquid detergent? thanks

Re: Powder laundry detergent & HE washers

  • I use liquid that is approved for HE washers with no problem.

The only thing is with ours you can't use liquid if you want to use soap in the pre-wash and wash compartments because it will all run in at the same time. Have to use powder so that it gets washed into the machine when the water squirts in the dispenser and not when gravity decides it's time. That is the only time I see powder being an advantage over liquid in an HE machine.

  • We've used liquid w/o a problem (just follow directions re: amount), though we generally use powdered. Ecos has a powder, so that's an options if you decide to go the powder route.

  • We've used both liquid & powder. I use Rockin' Green, which originally I got for diapers, but loved it so much I use it for all our laundry now.
  • Powder and liquid work in HE washers. HE washers need low-suds, clean rinsing soaps, not necessarily a liquid or powder. We have used 7th Generation and Planet liquid and powder in our HE washer, all with good results.

  • the sales person was correct, powder is better in he machines. the liquid can tend to gunk up the machine and the bearings. also, the liquid is made mostly out of water.. and so cheaper for the manufacturers to make, which is why they push it. i only use powder in my front loader, it's not home made, though i'm hoping to try it eventually. it will still be powder home made.

  • We were also told powder was better for HE machines, though you can use liquid. Powder, I was told, also helps cut down on the smell issues a lot of HE machines have.

I use Charlie's Soap and am VERY happy with it. I switched about 18 months ago and bought a huge 5lb tub (for around $100) and am not even 1/4 of the way through the tub! It lasts forever, it very eco friendly, and does a great job. Clothes are clean and bright.
