What not to wear

I spent my evening cleaning out my closet. I will admit that I have no idea why I was holding on to some of this.  I felt like I was on the show "What Not to Wear."   I got rid of 2 big bags of clothes.  I usually either save them for our annual garage sale, but this year I think I am going to donate them to the local church that has a free clothes give away for the needy.  It got me thinking...what do you do with your old clothes?

Re: What not to wear

  • I find that since I have been in my small apartment, I tend to get rid of clothes every Summer and Winter. Since, DH moved in I have half the space also.  I do not have room for all my clothes here so I store the other season's clothes at my mom's house.  So, when I change out my clothes, it forces me to go through them, and I realize I haven't worn 70% of them. LOL

  • Well done!! I did that too a couple of weeks ago.  Got rid of 20 items and have more to go.  Most of if is pretty daggy, but I put some on a free clothes swap site we have here and I give the rest to charity stores.

  • About two years ago, I moved down about 2 clothing sizes and it has taken me about two years to get rid of all my clothes that were too big. I also have a hard time getting rid of clothes from high school that I barely wore. I really hate the thought of getting rid of something that I didn't get a lot of use out of. I usually donate them to a clothing drive or goodwill or sometimes give them to someone my size (which is usually a preteen because I'm so short...)

  • I try to go through my clothes when I change them out for the seasons. But I'm pretty good about keeping only what I wear. When I do need to perge some clothes I makes a "mom", "goodwill" and "toss" bag. My mom often finds skirts and dress clothes that she wants and I never wear. I do, however, have a hard time getting rid of things that no longer fit i.e. I grew out of :( They hang in the back of my closet in hopes of lossing weight. Even though I know once I can fit back into them I won't want to wear old jeans and dresses.

It always feel so productive when you do a majoy closet clean out! Good job down sizing! Now you have room to buy more clothes :)

This is what I am afraid of.  Now that I see empty hangers, I feel like I need to fill them.

  • I have a big bag full of clothes to get rid of. Some of it doesn't fit but it's mostly just things I haven't worn in ages. Fortunately, a friend of mine is hosting a clothing swap next weekend. Of course it's entirely possible I'll come home with more than I left with, but in theory the "new" clothes will be stuff I'll actually wear.
  • Good for you!  I tend to purge my clothes once a year, usually near the end of summer.  I either donate them or hand them down to my younger cousin, but she's starting to get taller than me now so I don't know if that will continue.
