Would you be thrown off by this?....

I had a friend over last night watch the Golden Globes. We aren't besties but we've known each other for years and we're good enough friends to hang out every now & again. This was the 1st time I've invited her over. Anyway, I made dinner and she wouldn't eat ANYTHING. She was @ my house for hours.

My husband and I and my other friend ate but she just sat there. She didn't say, "oh, I just ate or I'm on a diet." She just kept saying (w/out provocation), " I'm going to eat." Then she never did. Even if I don't like something I will try it b/c someone made it for me... unless I'm allergic, then I'll speak up.

  • Very peculiar.  My first thought was eating disorder.  My second was that she didn't eat whatever you had served (vegetarian or maybe just picky).

My first thought was that she is one of those people who won't eat in a place where there are animals. I have two cats...but then I thought 1) my house is medicinally clean (at least when people come over) and large enough that they aren't in your face.

    2) She KNOWS I have cats, if you hate animals then politely decline the invitation.

I agree with Tarheels re: eating disorder... I'm sure that your house is very clean - and you have to feel sorry for her.  It is her problem - not yours.  Please don't take it personally - a very good friend of mine would rarely - if ever-  eat in front of people and then would binge later on at her apartment.  I believe she is in treatment now.

  • I"m going to agree with eating disorder.  It sounds like she was trying to convince herself or you that she was going to eat and she just couldn't bring herself to do it.  If she had a problem with cats, she'd say she already ate.  If she had a dietary restriction or allergy, she would tell you.

Saying you're going to eat or that you're "fine" and then you don't eat says to me that you're having an inner struggle with whether to eat that food or not and "not" won.

  • Yeah, strange.
  • My husband thinks she's awkward and doesn't pick up on social cues. If she has an eating disorder she hides it well. I've been out to dinner with her, seen her eat at work and she looks normal...but hell, eating disorders aren't always obvious.
  • Could be anything... I'm allergic to sulfites, which is a preservative that is many foods, drinks, meds. People think I'm weird b/c I bring my own food or have to skip what others eat. She might have an allergy or medical condition. Sometimes people don't want to say anything and take the focus away from everyone else and the meal they are enjoying.

If she's a friend, I wouldn't worry about the food issue. As you spend more time together in the future, the reason might surface on its own.
