I've been having a terrible time starting carrots this year. I grew them once before and had no problems. This month I've sown twice in two locations with two different seeds packets from two different sources, and I haven't had a single seedling. (We're in NorCal, so our winters allow for growing carrots and a few other veggies.)
I read online that I could start carrots in empty toilet paper rolls in seed starting mix, then just plant the TP roll once I get a seedling. Has anyone ever tried something like this? It sounds plausible to me. I put several in a cold frame today, just to see if I could get anything. Any other ideas on starting carrots?
Re: Carrot seed starting
Something I read recently is after you sow the seeds you instead of covering with more soil cover with a thin layer of sand. The sand has the weight to hold the seeds down from washing away and allows water to filter to the seeds more easily. I have no idea if this is your problem or not.
I have heard the tp roll idea before. However I would make sure all glue and residues are off the roll before putting it into the ground I wouldn't want that to make it into the soil.
