Runners come in....

I'm wanting to start training for a 1/2 marathon.  The one I think I'm going to run is in Vancouver, WA June 19th.

I have NEVER run more than a 5K and I've only done that once.  I have a LONG way to go.  Any words of encouragement? training ideas?  good songs to listen to while I run??

  • J-that's Awesome!!!!!!!!!! I'm actually putting together a few marathon/half marathon training plans for a bunch of my friends that are doing the half/full marathon in SF in July...I'm also running the R&R half in June in Seattle. I'd be happy to email you if you're interested...I've run quite a few 1/2's and a full...and I am NOT a born runner! BUT, nothing makes me more excited. Let me know or FB me!

  • J- you can totally do this. DH is totally flat-footed, never ran more than 1 mile in his life what I suggested we train for a full marathon (he thought I was joking until I showed him the training plan) and he pulled it off. The key is to take it easy- remember, you're running for fun and not time (especially any first event). Lots of people get injured training for a race when they think they should be running faster (usually because they are trying to compare themselves to other people that "should" be slower, case and point with the 70yo dood with one arm passed DH & I during one of our marathons). Taking it easy & enjoying yourself are really important points. Music distracts me, I lose focus on my breathing, risk getting hit by cars and forget to listen to the birds chirping so I've got nothing for music suggestions. Also, I have a tendency to run faster with music so I lose my natural trained tempo. Running outside is better than the treadmill- time passes by faster vs looking at the time on the treadmill (torture!). Oh, when running in Portland- embrace the rain- it'll remind you that you're alive. Get 2 pairs of shoes & rotate, allows the cushion to get back to normal after your run plus allows for drying if they're wet. Get good basics (fitted for shoes, don't wear cotton socks, wear supportive sport bras- champion makes an awesome underwire bra!, purchase body glide). Whew! Sorry I rambled.

Are you running SF in july? We're registered to do the full but I've been slacking at looking into housing- where are you friends staying or are they from there? Or at least, I think we're both registered. Had H register "us" but I think he messed up and registered himself twice. We shall see.

I've mostly given up on running any significant distances because I have exercise induced asthma.  But when I was trying, I had pretty good success with the Couch to 5k program.  It starts you off slow and has you gradually work your way up to running 5k over the course of 9 weeks or so.

You can download podcasts that tell you when to walk and when to run.  This was my favorite one to use.

Dood I totally use an albuterol inhaler before all my runs. Was diagnosed with EIA years ago and it's no fun.

I'm definately running int he SF marathon...I was only going to do the half, but am leaning towards the full now. BUT...I'll have to see how my springs schedule with volunteering and possibly working in a new position play out. I'm running with a ton of friends, but we're all from the bay area, so most live there (and I'll be couch hopping). Some of us are doing the half, some the full, and a few are even doing an ultra that Team Red White and Blue are hosting "on the side" in honor of our friend...50 miles? No thanks!

I figure if I'm ever going to do another full marathon, it might as well be that one, as SF is one of my favorite cities in the world (and it feels like home). let me know if you're going! (Or at least if J is running it twice! Smile)
