What colors go well with...

As I mentioned in a previous post my brother is moving out so my husband and I can finally make our home completely ours!  We are looking for almost everything for our living room.  Well we have been looking for different couches, coffee tables, entertainment centers and extra decor including wall and stuff for the coffee and end tables.  Our main color is brownish/bronzish.  Now we are wanting to do either a cream couch with gold swirls or a red couch with gold swirls (both victorian looking couches).  What other colors may go well with these?  Any and all ideas are quite welcome!

  • You can put lots of colors with brownish colors, IMO.  But a gold-tone might make it a bit more difficult.  The easiest way to see some colors together is to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a bunch of those paint idea pamphlets.

  • If you are a fan of What Not to Wear, you will know that brown is a neutral and neutrals go with everything Wink

But, I would do what Tisha said and have a try to match up some colours in the paint department.

  • I personally like the idea of the red couch and then you could do cream accents all around the room.  I'd worry that a cream colored couch would show dirt too much.  I also think lighter teals go pretty with brown.

  • I actually really like brown with teal and red together, but it's very Martha Stewart, so I understand that some people might not dig it.

  • I personally would be too scared to have a cream couch, plus we have 3 dogs so that would be a bad idea for us. While a red/gold couch might be a bit harder to match things with, it would definitely work with neutrals, like browns and creams, and such and I love statement furniture.

  • I like red with brown/gold. Maybe sage green?

This. I am afraid of anything in the white family when it comes to furniture but thats because of our animals. And I agree about the statement furniture. One great color can really set the tone of a room. I think as long as you surround it with neutrals you are good.

  • Thank you ladies for your input! We do not have any animals so that would not be an issue with us.  I may go to Lowe's as Tisha suggested to get some of those paint samples and get some ideas.  Thanks!
