Bee Houses

Does anyone have one? I'm not talking for honey bee keeping but for other pollinators. Thinking about buying one from Etsy (see link) but want to see if it works!

Re: Bee Houses

  • Do you have a lot of homeless Mason bees?

The reason I ask is because the primary attractant is FOOD, not housing.

Whether insects, fish, birds, or mammals, the primary habitat selection criteria is proximity to abundant food sources, meaning if you want to attract pollinators you need to provide them with flowers for as many months of the year as you can. THEN they will look for places nearby to hide and reproduce.

If you already have large populations of pollinators, odds are that they already have homes... in other words, this item is probably not particularly effective for its marketed purpose, IMO. I would guess that it would be just as likely to be filled with Earwigs a month after you put it up, but an entomologist would know best.
