Bed vs. Crib

I need your advice ladies! DH and I have been going back and forth on this issue and I need to make a decision ASAP!

DS is still in his crib and does not try to climb out. We are moving him to a different bedroom and a good friend gave me a new twin bed because they just got bunk beds. Should we attempt to switch him to the bed when we move him in two weeks to the new room or do we move the crib with him? My sister said we can use her crib for baby "dos", so we don't have to kick him out of his crib.

 What do you think?

What are you ladies with baby 2 on the way doing?

Re: Bed vs. Crib

  • I think that Peter is probably old enough to move to a bed.  He'll be two very soon (by the time you move him to his new room)?

  • If you can borrow a crib I say take that route.  Were you planning to have the baby in your room for a few months?  If so you can always wait a bit to make the decision....maybe by April/May he will be ready to be out of the crib.

  • I have an almost 3 year old in a crib and not planning to move him unless I have to anytime soon.  I am so scared of the trouble he will likely get into when he's in a regular bed.  I know lots have moved to a bed at that age and done fine though.
  • We've been debating this as well, and were all set to move him to a big boy bed (crib we got on CL w/ a side removed) this weekend.  Then, we realized that he doesn't climb out of the crib yet either, he's happy in there and he sleeps well.  Why tempt fate right now right before baby #2 comes along, right?  So we're leaving him in his crib, and will use the CL crib for baby #2 and have it in our room.  He loves his crib too, so I think he'd have a hard time and the last thing I need right now are more sleep interruptions!

  • I was curious when people moved their kids too. I think Luke is too young when baby 2 comes - he'll only be 18 months. So we're getting a second crib. But I was still curious.

  • I just ordered Owen's bed yesterday.  We'll be transitioning him as soon as it arrives.  He doesn't climb out either, and he sleeps really well in the crib, but I think it's time.  He's almost two, he naps in a bed, he likes to have a pillow, etc., so I think he'll like it after the initial transition worry.

I don't want to buy a second crib -- it seems like such a waste of money for something that's used so briefly -- but I don't want to transition him after she's born because I don't want him to "blame" her for the change.  We're going to make it a new fun exciting thing for him and give him time to adjust before she arrives.  (Admittedly, we're cutting it close.  I wanted to do it immediately after the holidays but I ran into problems with the original bed I was going to buy.)

I've ordered the basic daybed from here, with the idea that the two kids (who will be sharing a room) will each have one, and we'll either bunk them eventually, or give them both lofts.  My intention is that these are the beds they'll sleep in until college!

  • We moved Grace a month or so after she turned 2.  Our crib converts to a toddler bed so we did that first and also put her twin bed in her room.  She stayed in her toddler bed for about a month and then went to her twin bed.  Overall it was a pretty easy transition for her and us.  Her sleep habits never really changed.

  • I wonder if it would be easier for you to transition now bc #2 isn't here yet?
