How can I make Valentine?s Day extra special after the worst holidays ever??!!

I really want to make Valentine?s Day extra special. This year was our first Christmas and new years together. The holidays were kind of a disaster. Ok it was maybe the worst holiday season of my life. A week before Christmas one of my best friends killed himself.  We don?t live near our families and we changed our plans at the last minute to not go home for Christmas, in order to spend it with my friend?s partner and two young sons. The entire week leading up to Christmas was miserable. My husband was very helpful, supportive and never complained about sleeping on my friends? floor for a week so that my friend was never alone.

In November we had made plans to see a hockey game with friends for New Years Eve. We decided to make a whole weekend out of it we reserved a room in a wonderful hotel. On New Years Eve I received a call that a tornado had gone thought our neighborhood destroying 100 homes. Due to bad weather we were stuck in St Louis until New Years Day. Thankfully when we got back home our house was ok and no one in our area was hurt. Throughout the entire fiasco he was so mentally strong when I couldn?t be and he was my rock trough the storm.

All in all it was a terrible few weeks. This is why I want to make Valentine?s Day special. While we cannot go back and change history I can try to make new wonderful memories. I just want to do so much for him to show him how much I love him and appreciate what he has done for me.

Does anyone have any ideas how to make Valentine?s Day amazing? Thank you so much.

  • I'm so sorry about your string of unfortunate events, especially losing your friend. I don't have much 'unique' to offer but after all this maybe doing it 'all' would be your best bet: if you can afford it go to a wonderful and romatic restaurant together and arrange for the waiter to bring your gift out to him, maybe with a beautiful stone engraved with both your initials (personalizedgifts.com) and then tell him that he is your rock.  If you can't swing the restaurant you can cook him all his favorites and surprise him with the rock or heart shaped stone engraved with something sweet to let him know you appreciate him. Just one idea....
  • Wow that is a great idea. I think along with diner we are going to go away for the weekend. Thanks for your help.

  • This is going to sound backwards, but maybe try not to put too much pressure/planning on Valentine's Day.  You've had a REALLY rough couple of months, and they would have been rough even if they had been in June, but I'm sure it was extra difficult because of the correlation with Christmas and New Years.  We can't control outside events, and there's no telling what's going to happen (you're certainly an expert on this by now).  I would worry that making a big deal on Valentine's Day could backfire if things don't go exactly as you plan.  Your nerves are frazzled right now and if I were in your place, it wouldn't take much to ruin a perfectly nice night.

  • You know, I thought about this more and think I'm going to do the rock thing too.  I read Dr. Laura's book "The Care and Feeding of Husbands" (stop laughing, its good) and she makes some great points about nurturing one's relationship on a daily basis.  Letting him know he's my rock is along those lines.

I think I'm stealing this idea too!  I love it!

  • OUCH!!!  Can't blame you at all for wanting a good holiday after all that!  Glad you had someone to lean on!

Perhaps after all you had just been through...try something personal.  Does he have any preferred meals or cakes that you can make?  Have you been wanting to try something but never had the excuse to do so?  If it's appropriate, this may be the time.  Do some digging and be creative!  Favorite music? A favorite film that means something to the both of you? Afterwards write down what has worked and build on it.

     Best of luck!

  • I called the local beauty school and we are going to have a couple's massage in the afternoon and then out to dinner that evening.
  • I am so so sorry about the loss of your friend and all of the things you went through during the holiday season. If it was me, I would make a really amazing meal for my DH, have a romantic movie lined up (if he wanted to watch it), some really good wine, and a shared bubble bath. As cheesey as stuff like that sounds, and it seems like it's a girl thing, guys actually do appreciate when you make something really romantic for them too. Plan out your whole night to be romantic and relaxing and he'll be happy. I did that for DH's birthday (it was 1 1/2 months after we moved 3K miles away from home and didn't know anyone so we couldn't plan anything) and he was thrilled to pieces. Said it was one of his best birthdays ever.

This is exactly what was going through my mind.
