W(ork)R: Ways to decrease spending

What are some things your workplaces are doing to decrease spending?

Mine:

- All incoming/outgoing faxes are electronic (saves a ton of paper and ink)

- No more styrofoam cups in the kitchen

- Try to fax or email all invoices (saves a ton on postage and paper)

Hmmm...that is all I can think of right now.  What are you companies doing to save money?

Re: W(ork)R: Ways to decrease spending

  • going electronic on payroll; taxes; we have to enter codes to use the fax or copy machine; automatic lights & flushers; stay in homes rather than hotels if possible for travel.
  • We fax and email as much as we can. There are things that we need to send to customers like receipts when they ask for them and mail to the company so we have to use postage for that. We have regular cups to use. We bring our own lunches and containers.

  • Electronic payroll- no paper checks

    Electronic faxes

GPS map downloads for our drivers instead of paper maps

We switched our phone plan to an electronic server phone system instead of a regular phone line (like AT&T).  Our montly phone bill was cut in half.

    same here (grr!)

We started a best management practice plan and the largest goal was to reduce energy use by 5%  by 2012. Last year we reduced it by 25%. A large portion of that was due to an air balancing and reprogramming the heating and cooling system, so it cost up front.  We also keep non-essential lights off.

Encourage people to switch to a e-newsletter to reduce postage and printing cost.

I know there have been a few other things that I can't think of.

  • By releasing the part-timer who works from home on her own laptop and takes her work everywhere she goes and who feels guilty for time spent away from work, even if that time is to scrub the toilet or vacuum the rug on her unpaid "lunch break," that's how.

  • By giving us less of a classroom budget so we have to use our salary that we earned to support our own family on things for our students to use.

We do have motion sensor lights and are asked to turn off our electronics at the end of the day. They also cut down on the refrigerators and microwaves and made it so we can only have them in a certain room.

  • Honestly, i've never worked for a company with the perks/benefits like I have now.

I have insurance/dental/vision.  The fridge is stocked with juice/pop/propels.  The coffee machine makes tons of different drinks - cappacinos and stuff.  Friday is bagel day.  There's a wii in the break room.

Having said that - i took a 15% pay cut for this job.
