Vegan Soap and other bathroom products

Does anyone know who makes/sells vegan soap?  I'd love to switch to something that does not use animal fats.  What other common bathroom products contain animal ingrediants?

What do you think of Dove soap?  I've heard good and bad things about it being eco/animal friendly.

Thanks so much!

Re: Vegan Soap and other bathroom products

  • PETA has a list of ingredients to avoid.  I don't know a ton about soaps, but castille soaps used olive oil instead of animal fat, so a vegan castille soap would be a good start.  Are you looking for liquid or solid?  You can use Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps for just about anything, and they have a bar soap that is good, too.  Otherwise you probably have a lot of local options available (farmers markets, co-op, even etsy).

I don't know if dove is vegan, but it does have lots of chemicals in it.  Are you looking to avoild animal products or animal parts?  I.e., do you do milk?  If you like soap like dove and you are ok with milk, you might like a goatmilk soap.

  • Everything I've seen says that Dove tests on animals so that doesn't seem very vegan to me. Add to that the chemicals and yuck.

You could try Kiss My Face, Tom's of Maine and Burt's Bees.  I know I've seen those at places like Target and the regular drug store.  I get a locally made soap at the co-op that's vegan.

Leaping Bunny has a list of companies that pledge not to test on animals.  They don't necessarily pledge to make products without animal ingredients but you can easily find that out by reading the labels.  PETA also has a list of cruelty free companies.

  • Thanks for the comments/recommendations so far!

To answer the first reply, I guess I am looking more for "vegetarian soap" (which just sounds kind of funny!)  I do drink milk.  I am just hoping to avoid animal fats in my soap.

  • Definitely castille soaps. You can buy liquid and bar versions. There are a lot of olive, coconut, and hemp oil soaps out there.

I second Kiss My Face and Tom's of Maine. I like their stuff because they don't put add a lot of fragrences. I love KMF's shave cream. TOM used to have an amazing shave cream, but they discontinued it (booo!). TOM obviously does great toothpaste. DH has used TOM deoderant forever. Aside from a cuticle cream, I've never really found a Burt's Bees product that wow'd me - but I know a ton of people love their products. I know some people don't consider beeswax vegan, but it sounds like that's not an issue for you.

I'm not sure if it's vegan, but I use California Baby shampoo... yep, baby shampoo. I also use Desert Essence Organics Coconut conditioner. I know it's vegan. I really like the combo. I ditched sulfites and silicones a while ago and have never looked back.

There are some really good goat milk lotions and soap out there, too.

  • Ok, then i think goat milk soap is your best bet -- you can probably get it locally, and it's rich and moistury and great :)  I've used soap and lotion from this company (local to me), which is probably not helpful to you, but you can check it out anyway http://www.graceharborfarms.com/

  • Alba Botanicals - 100% vegetarian products which meet vegan standards except for the following - link

Lollibomb Beauty - 100% vegan, and look like cake :) They have soap, and beauty products

Vibrant Naturals - 100% vegan.  This is featured in Whole Foods or Sprouts sometimes as well.  If you have local grocery stores that are vegan/vegetarian, or gourmet stores that carry these products, it's a good bet to try there first.

    Beauty makeup -

    Urban Decay - 100% vegetarian, 65% vegan!

I swear by this soap. I love it! They are all vegetable based soaps and are silky and creamy and wonderful! Plus, they smell great. And as an added bonus, they seriously last forever.

ETA: They make a bunch of stuff other than soap too. The cleaning products are nice. And I really like the chapstick too.

  • Try Lush cosmetics!  I know a lot of people aren't big fans because they have used parabens in the past, but they are constantly working to better themselves as a company, are almost 100% vegan, and do not buy any of their materials from companies that perform animal testing.  All of their products are handmade, but they have a wide variety of fun scents, colors, and cool bath products!  Check it out:
