Anyone ordered from Bluestone Perennials?

I got the link on the D&R board many years ago but still haven't ordered anything. (www.bluestoneperennials.com).

If anyone has, have you been pleased with what you got?

How did you feel that the prices compared to your local nurseries?

The selection is incredible and I can't find half of that stuff locally, it all looks so amazing. ;) I think I might pull the trigger and order this year.

Re: Anyone ordered from Bluestone Perennials?

  • I ordered a pre-planned garden from them a couple of years ago (the shade garden).  I had never done mail order plants before and was shocked at how small they were when they arrived.  I was expecting the little pots like you see at the nursery, but they were much smaller.  I now know that that is pretty typical for catalog plants, but was disappointed at the time.

So my advice would be - if you want plants with instant impact that are not bulbs, you should probably go with your local nursery.  If you're willing to let the plants mature and fill in over time, Bluestone is fine.

In general - when ordering online or from a catalog, make sure to find out if the plant is shipped bare root or in a particular size pot so that you know what to expect.

  • Ditto alliapistor. The plants from Bluestone are small in comparison to what you can get at the nursery. That being said, I've been extremely pleased with my orders.

I ordered some daylilies from them and they are doing wonderfully. I'm planning on ordering some candytuft from them. I previously ordered some, but it didn't do well in the spot I planted it. (Basically my dog kept stepping on it and it never recovered from the abuse).

  • Hi!  I agree with the pps try looking for some better local nurseries they are really the way to go!  When I got into gardening I had no idea how many local nurseries I had until I joined my local garden club.  They told me all the good places to go and when all the sales were.
  • I ordered from them. When I got my order, I was so disappointed. However, a couple of years later, I'm impressed. My advice would be to order the interesting plants that you can't find at your local nursery. Order the biggest size they sell. Buy more than you think you need. Don't expect big, beautiful plants... at least, not when you open the boxes... it'll be 2 years before they look like you'd expect. When mine were delivered, they were tiny and had slugs. Despite how bad I thought it was, the plants turned out great. I'm glad I have some unique treasures in my garden. I would order from them again.
