i am brand new to this board, and hoping someone can help me! purchased a toshiba laptop in november- my husband accidently dropped it last night and now it is not turning on completely. it appears that it starts to boot up, but then goes to a black screen with just the cursur arrow. i no zero about computers. any idea of what could have possible happen? Hard drive disconnected, hard drive broke, more than this?
Also wondering that if it is a hard drive problem and we need a new hard drive installed, approx. how much that would cost us? Does that typically include recovery of data?
Last ?, what about standard 90day-1yr warranties, do you think I should look into this or take it somewhere to get it fixed.
Thanks so much in advance!!!!!
Re: dropped laptop ?
It's unlikely to be a connection issue. You're probably damaged a component.
You could try a process like this:
Reboot computer
As computer is booting up, press F2 - Set Up
After you enter Set Up go down to Boot Device Configuration (BDC)
Under Hard Disk Book Priority you will see first, second, third, and boot other device
For the first boot device select "Hard Disk"
After you have made this selection, press F10 to save and restart the PC.
You could also try a boot from the installation CD.
Obviously, a manufacturer will not honor your warranty if the product is broken because you dropped it on the floor. Especially if the fix involves sending a technician out to repair your PC, this will probably be obvious to them.
If you only need a new hard drive installed, it should be the cost of the new drive (usually less than $100 depending on size) plus installation cost. The installation cost will vary depending on how difficult it is to get to the drive. My guess is anywhere from, say, $50 to $150 depending on where you go.
The issue is that if the laptop fell, there is a chance that other components of the computer broke as well, not just the hard drive. So even if you get the drive replaced, the computer still might not work. Definitely take it somewhere to get checked out. On the flip side, there is a chance that it's just a computer issue and the drive itself is ok.
As far as data recovery goes, nope. Typical hard drive replacements are just that - replacement of the drive. You should get the original drive back to pursue data recovery on your own (if necessary).
