Laura, I know that you are going to run a road race this spring. That is one of my goals for myself. I've only been running on and off for 3 years or so, so I've never done a race before.
So....Have you run races before?
Are you signed up for the race already?
( I'm thinking that if I sign up for one now and have to pay for it, I'm more likely to follow through with it. Just being honest with myself.)
If anyone has input, I'd love to hear it! I also thought maybe we could post our races and dates. Then, maybe post tips, vents etc. Also, if anyone was curious about starting to run you could post questions/issues too. Your thoughts??

I have done a few events in the past and really enjoyed them. I have done a mini-triathlon twice a few years ago and a marathon relay this September. I haven't run since then though and I would like to get back into it. The marathon relay had 5 legs to it with varying lengths, I did it with my 3 sisters and a family friend. I honestly can't even describe the atmosphere it was just so encouraging to see all the runners there from all different walks of life and all different fitness levels, all running together to reach their goal. I had such an amazing feeling at the end of it and vowed I'd someday do a whole marathon (I've sort of lost that feeling since the race-26.2 miles is a loooooong run lol!). But I do really enjoy running.
My sister is trying to get me to train and run a half marathon this May and I'm still debating whether or not to do it!
One thing I found out after the first event I competed in was that I was waaay too hard on myself and had really high expectations for what it would be like. What I realized was that just finishing the race was enough and gave me a sense of satisfaction. There were people at all fitness levels and there was no shame in stopping and walking to catch your breath if you got too tired. No one will judge you for your time-they will be cheering you on that you had the confidence to do the race at all!
Sorry this was long winded but I would love to start training again and do a race this spring/summer, so count me in!
Hey, this is awesome! I'm so glad you girls are up for this! It sounds like a lot of us are kind of in the same place in experience. I am thinking I will do the 5k Race For a Cure in honor of my mom. I think that it's in June, but I'm not positive. I should probably register as soon as it opens up
I AM going to do this though!
Kristen, thanks for sharing your experience. It does make me feel a little more confident in actually participating in a race. I think it would be really awesome if you could do the half marathon! Let us know how it's going with that.
I haven't run since probably October... Ugh, slacker. It's icy right now, but next week is supposed to be high twenties, so I am hoping it will clear up and I can start going outside. Is anyone running right now?
I'm not running right now really. In the fall I had started the running program but got about halfway through before it started getting cold outside. My lungs burn wicked bad when I run outside in the cold....I know I need to slowly work on this though.
When i've been getting to the gym (not for a class) I'll either walk on a 6-6.5% include at a fast pace for like 45 minutes or I'll do some running intervals (run-walk 5 min intervals). That's about as much running as I've been doing.
Mine do, too. I'm not sure whether that is because they just aren't trained for running well yet, or if it legitimately means I shouldn't run in the cold?...
That's great that you've been working at the gym. I don't have a membership because I don't think I would use it enough to be worth it. I have my work out dvds and riding Velvet, but that's not running. I'm looking forward to the weather clearing up so I can start! *Fingers crossed that I can start in February!*
I think it's just that they are used to running in general and then the cold just makes it worse. Gonna start with baby steps on getting my lungs used to the cold. My goal is to start the running program March 1!
Yayy! I'll be right there with ya!
Thanks, I definitely will! I just want to get back in shape, I feel so lazy right now! I'm not sure I'll do the half marathon or not but I would love to start running again. And I also am the same as you and Lauren that when it's cold outside I get horrible lung burn, so until it warms up I don't know how much I'll be able to run outside.
