Seed starting...?

I've been a long time lurker....and the garden posts the other day got me all excited to start my own garden this year. I want to do it right so I need some recommendations on seed starting. Any good places to order a seed starting kit/supplies...? Any advice/suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Re: Seed starting...?

  • A local nursery would have everything you need, and advice on how to use them.   I don't remember the sites dh has bought seeds from, but i do know they are in OR, so probably not where you'd want them from, anyway... If you aren't concerned about where they were harvested (for acclimatisation reasons), then you can google heirloom seeds or organic seeds and choose a company that you like :)

    Some i know of are:

  • Ditto CDMay, you should be able to get the plastic flats where the soil goes and the plastic lid to encourage germination from your local nursery.  We order our seeds from High Mowing Seeds and Seed Exposure Exchange.  Only plants who growth cycle are too long for your area when directly planted outside need to be started indoors, things like tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.  If you directly planted tomato seeds outside for example, the plant wouldn't be able to set fruit before the first frost killed it. When you start your seeds indoors depends on when your last spring frost date is.  Tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers should be started indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost, so for me in VA the last frost is April 30 so I start seeds indoors the first week of March.  I found the Vegetable Gardener's Bible to be a great resource on starting a veggie garden.

  • I've ordered from here before: http://www.seedsavers.org/

They have heirloom and organic seeds.

  • I just went to a seed starting presentation last night about tomatos, pepper and eggplants, and they used the handout located at http://www.richmondgrows.org/uploads/3/6/8/4/3684274/seed_starting_class_pdf.pdf.  I thought it was helpful, especially for someone brand new to seeds.

ETA: There's a resource page on the back that suggests places to buy supplies.
