I've been a long time lurker....and I've been doing a lot of research and am excited to start my own garden this year. I want to do it right so I need some recommendations on seed starting. Any good places to order a seed starting kit/supplies...? Any advice/suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Re: Seed Starting...?
You need to make sure you get a window that gets TONS of direct sunlight. If not, get a grow light (not incandescnet light bulb style though--gets too hot. Or flourscent light with a cool & warm bulb). The light will need to be just a few inches above the seedlings (so, you'll need to move as it grows) for 12-16 hrs/day.
Otherwise, I've used plain potting soil & "special" seed starting mix & haven't noticed a big difference. I've also used proper "pots" and re-purposed yogurt cups. Both work.
Good luck! My blog has a step-by-step seed starting post if you're interested.
I use a basic Jiffy seed starting greenhouse. It's 3 sets of lids, cells, and a plastic pan to set the cells in. I make my own mixture of soil depending on what I'm growing. I didn't particularly care for the buzzy pellets of compacted soil.
I have a 4' double fluorescent fixture that I use on my succulents. I'm looking at building an LED array. If you do a little more research on the web, LED christmas lights can be used to start your seeds indoors:
