what have you done to decrease your spending?
Hello ladies! Just wondering what you all have done to decrease your spending....anything crazy or out of the ordinary?
Re: what have you done to decrease your spending?
When it's yellow, let it mellow.
When it's brown, flush it down.
As my husband likes to joke, "We use both sides of the toilet paper."
We recently relocated for my job and DH was looking for a job for a few months. As a result we're living in a 1 br apt. (with our son). DH now has a job and we're actively looking for a new place to live. And it's not a particularly nice building. It works though, but I'm sure most people would consider that to be drastic.
We cut out our landline and cable.
We rarely eat out any more.
And much to my shagrin we're shopping more at Wal-Mart.
Oh and we became a one-car household. That would be kind of drastic for most people as well.
Bought a coffee maker, found a coffee we love adn brew at home.
DH takes a lunch into work.
My main thing in 2011 is to stop going to Target at lunch. I work right next door to a Target and I swear in 2010 sometimes I bought stuff there every day! So far I have only been there once in 2011 and that was for a baby gift for someone else so I figure it doesn't count. Ha ha.
We also cook a lot of soups/stews and what not so that they can be used for multiple meals.
Lowered heating temps a couple degrees (gradually) because our bill was through the roof last month.
Shop at Aldi and/or other discount grocery stores.
Thrift store shop when neccesary -- don't shop at all when not neccesary. Like, literally, I have to avoid the shopping section of town.
Borrowing books rather than buying them.
Not giving gifts on holidays (cards for valentines Day, special dinner at home for birthdays, etc.)
Meal planning
Living in the cheapest rental we can stand the location of
Buying used cars on CL with cash
Wives Unscripted
Meal Planning
Limit food shopping and other shopping throughout the month.
Automatically put X amount per pay check into savings, rest goes to living/bills
Not buying big items unless can pay cash.
limiting going out w/ DH and friends
Limits vacations.
Have game night/movie night w dvd's w the neighbors vs. going out.
Grocery lists and sticking to the lists-nothing more.
Major coupons and I check to make sure I get a better deal either with the coupon or another product-generic... if the coupon won't work-I don't use it.
****Generic on most stuff.****Buy meat in bulk-freeze.
Our newest is to use the canned goods, etc in our kitchen right now. Our freezer is also packed w stuff, so we're going to use that stuff now.
Paperback swap, friends, or used bookstore for books... or library-but I'm bad at that.
No Netflix-use Redbox instead or borrow dvd's from neighbors.
Camping for vacations.
