Tell an outsider about living in Portland!
I am a Chicago native, living in the San Francisco area currently, but looking at an interesting job in the Portland area. What do I need to know about living in Portland? I have never been to OR or Portland. I am a city person, so I am curious about living in the city and its neighborhoods - what would be the best places to live in the city?
TIA!
Re: Tell an outsider about living in Portland!
You're going to hear this a lot but first and foremost find a job before you move out here. We are still at 10+% unemployment here. Secondly we have long, wet, dreary winters that are very grey and not everybody can handle that.
On the upside we have usually lovely summers and people are very outdoorsy. There are forests, mountains, waterfalls, volcanoes. The city is quite small and easy to navigate. It's bike friendly and we have a reasonably good public transit city. We have great restaurants and wonderful local wines. We have farmer's markets. Come out here for a visit to check it out, if you're really interested.

I moved to the area about a year ago, after spending most of my life in the SF Bay Area. I can honestly say that I love living in the PNW and am happy we made the move.
As Esther said, the winters can be dreary - but if you live in SF proper, you're used to fog and cooler temps. It was a bit harder getting used to the rain. However, if you have the right gear then it won't bother you as much. Summer is gorgeous and the days are really long so you can get out and enjoy the sunshine even after work.
I don't know much about living in the city, but I will say that downtown Portland has a lot of great restaurants, pubs, and shopping (woot!), and is MUCH cleaner than SF.
Good luck!
