Adoption peeps

Due to health issues, my sister is looking into adoption. She is getting married this summer, and knowing that she's got a 3-5 year process ahead of her, she and her fiance want to start moving soon after the wedding.

Can anyone recommend any good books/websites?

Re: Adoption peeps

  • The adoption board on the bump is a wonderful resource!

They recommend Adoption for Dummies as a must read to understand all the options out there for adoption.

And just an FYI if she's in Cali and looking at foster to adopt it can be less then a years process depending on the area she lives in.

  • Right now she should just get familiar with all the different types of adoptions. It's really not that long of a process, except for some international programs. And often, for those programs, there's a marriage length requirement. So, they'll just need to get as much info as they can. For us, we spent a few years learning, talking, thinking about adoption before we actually got in the books. The Adoption board on the Bump is really good if you want to let her know about it. Here are some faqs from the board:

  • We are persuing IVF first, but an adoption agency I spoke to said you have to be married for a min of one or two years before applying, I cant remember which. I was bummed when I heard this.

I don't think our agency has this requirement (domestic adoption). E-mail me if you want info... dragonflybride at gmail dot com

  • We got "Adoption for Dummies" or whatever to start looking up information. Between my health issues and DH's run with cancer, it's pretty much going to be impossible for us to have kids without help. So we looked more into this option last year to kind of prep us. But - we aren't really sure what we want to do.
  • Another vote on starting with adoption for dummies. Also just a note, there are somethings that don't change Depending on the route you choose, but certain things are Agency specific ( like the length of time you've been married) or country specific if you are doing international adoption. Not everything someone says they had to do will hold true for every situation. I'm also with dragonfly bride's agency, so my experience is similar, but If your friend needs info, I'm happy to chat with her as well. Carfar650@yahoo.com
