Are Solar Panels worth it?

We are considering getting solar panels as a way to create energy efficient energy for our house. We could lease the panels with no money down and our energy bills would only change about $3/month. If you could get the panels for no money down would you? Are there pros/cons of getting panels if you already have them? Give me the details.

Re: Are Solar Panels worth it?

  • In our area, the most efficient and common solar panels are the ones that help produce hot water.  Our house layout, and the accompanying water heater we have are so efficient with each other that for our house, solar panels are NOT worth it.

I don't think the ones that produce power are advanced enough for private home power production yet--again, at least not in my area.  The only solar panels that are used for power are in solar "fields" on industrial roofs and they only produce enough for about 1/32 of the power needed for those buildings.  Every little bit helps, so we're hoping that the technology comes around.  We'd LOVE to get off the power grid!

    Good luck with your decision.

  • We lease our solar panels.  We have 37 of them on the roof on the back of our house.  They have saved us a huge amount of money.  Our summer bills used to run ~$450, this past summer, including our $120/month lease, our total bill each month was ~$175.  Yup...that's about $50 in electricty that we were having to pay.  I really wish we could get more panels so we'd be totally off Edison.  It's so cool to see the meter running backwards!!  I love the fact that we're not only saving money but using the sun's energy!

We live in Southern California where we have more sunny days per year than not.  Our house also faces the "ideal" direction.  Oh!  We also noticed that with the panels on the roof, our upstairs doesn't get as hot as it used to when they weren't there.
