I need to get a new appraisal on my ring for insurance, the one I have is too old they said. The insurance company (DH's aunt) referred me to a place that will do it for around $30. The place where I got my ring wants to charge $100+. They say because a certified gemologist would do it (don't know if the other place would be or not).
My questions is why do I need a certified gemologist to appraise my ring? The woman at the jewler couldn't explain to me why it matters.
Re: Jewelry Appraisal Q
DO NOT go to a Jewelry Store. ALWAYS go to a completely independent appraiser. And Independent Jewelry Appraiser is a gemologist, just like the one your jeweler has, the big difference is that the independent appraiser works for YOU, NOT the jeweler. The one at the jeweler you bought it from is paid to make you feel you got a great deal, whether you actually did or not.
I always recommend Therese Kienstra. She's independent, thorough and is accurate. Her number is: 314-862-5054
Jewelers will either ridiculously overinflate the cost (usually the one who sold it to you) or will ridiculously underestimate it to make you feel you didn't get a good deal so they can try to sell you.
