Neighborhoods in/near Milwaukee
Hey! My husband and I will be moving to Milwaukee and I wanted to get some local opinions on the best places to live. He's going to Marquette so we dont want to live too awful far from there. We are not opposed to the suburbs but we really like a city atmosphere (lots of things in walking distance etc) - any places that we should check out/stay away from?
Thanks for all the help!
Re: Neighborhoods in/near Milwaukee
If you like the city atmosphere, I suggest living on the East Side. There are a TON of places to rent just off Brady St. You'll be within 10 mins of Marquette. The Bayview area and Tosa area are also good choices. Still close to downtown, but also has a lot of their own stuff going on like farmers markets, outdoor concerts, non chain restaurants...
I would stay away from Brookfield, West Allis, Greendale, Greenfield, Waukesha and Oak Creek.
Hope this helps!
I wouldn't live right around the Marquette campus. Just not a great area.
Third Ward (downtown south of the highway): very fun, very trendy, very pricey. I'd live there in a heartbeat if I had the budget.
East Side (east of the river, from downtown north): very fun, expensive but not as bad as Third Ward, street parking sucks (especially in the winter). A bit of a crapshoot on housing quality - some great places, some places owned by absentee landlords. The closer you get to UWM, particularly north of North Ave., the more undergrads you get.
Brewers Hill (west of the river, south of North Ave): up-and-coming area, mix of rent prices.
Riverwest (west of the river, north of North Ave): transitional, some pockets better than others, mix of housing quality, less expensive than the East Side. I'd live there, but my H won't.
Bayview (roughly Bay Street to Oklahoma, the lake to Howell): super cute, fun, trendy, less expensive than the East Side. Can be a little tricky to find a decent rental, as there are a lot of SFHs and a lot of long-term rentals. My favorite neighborhood.
Suburbs: Shorewood is my favorite, just north of the city, along the lake. Cute neighborhoods, quick drive to downtown MKE. St. Francis and Cudahy on the south side aren't as cute but are also a quick commute. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Greenfield/Brookfield/West Allis/anything west. Too much hassle to get into downtown for my taste, but YMMV.
Good luck finding a place.
Just make sure you go and visit the area a few times (especially at night) before you sign a lease for an apartment! I made this mistake and signed the lease for an apartment after only going to visit it once and 4 months later I had to move out because the crime was too bad at night. The nearby robberies and murders in my neighborhood were getting out of hand. At the cute little cafe I visited a man tried to rob someone; the waiter interfered and got shot. Then a few weeks later a lady got raped in the middle of the day along the river bike path I used every afternoon right at the same on ramp I took. That along with the shootings I could hear at night and constant police sirens. The last straw was when my neighbor got beat up and robbed outside our door when he was riding his bike! That weekend my co-workers helped me pack everything in garbage bags and moved me someplace safer. I had to pay for two apartments but it was worth it to feel safe (and I kept a revolver in my nightstand that I wasn't afraid to use). I lived in Riverwest right next to the river. Oh and stay away from the UWM area too. My BIL goes to school there and just got robbed at gun point a few weeks ago (after a long string of robberies). And a HS friend of mine got killed there last year as he was delivering food. The good and bad neighborhoods are extremely segregated but that doesn't prevent the crime from filtering over into the "nice" areas.
Yeah sorry I'll never live in Milwaukee again.
Just for the record, I went to Marquette and lived either on campus or right off of campus for four years and I was never robbed, beaten, raped, etc. Any city has crime so you have to be on the lookout but I never felt unsafe.
The third ward area is nice and not too terribly far from campus. It is trendy and hip, but like someone else said, it's also more expensive. Wauwatosa is right up Wisconsin Avenue so getting to campus would be easy and it's a nice city type suburb with lots of duplexes and apartments.
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then success with condoms! Who would ever have guessed.
This Cluttered Life
We live in Wauwatosa and I've worked downtown. It's not a bad commute at all.
Personally, I wouldn't live anywhere in the city itself. I think it depends on your comfort level.
