So, Dave had his yearly review a few weeks ago. The general manager told him he's doing a great job blahblahblah, but the company's broke so she can only give him a little raise right now, and they would work on a bigger raise in six months. That's cool, whatever, as long as he keeps his job, I can handle a little raise.
Well, he just go his official review write-up. "Raise Given: No."
What the F*(%?! Are you SERIOUS?! How the hell are you going to tell him he'll be making a little bit more money and then NOT FOLLOW THROUGH?! He's afraid to go to the GM about it because he doesn't want to "rock the boat." HE can't go to the owners about it because they leave the business decisions to the GM. And Louisiana is a no-fault state, so if he does make too much noise about it, he's afraid they will fire him, and he will have no recourse.
He's been looking for a new job for months now, and nothing's come up.
And I don't know where I'm going with this anymore. Can we please just catch a break?
Thanks for "listening."
Re: OMGWTFPoptarts?!?!?!: a vent
My company is doing stupid stuff like this too. My boss told me last week that even though people are doing excellent jobs they will not be getting raises this year. Which is ridiculous because we had a record 4th quarter, and a huge year last year in terms of revenue.
The first year I worked here, they had no raises or promotions period. Last year, they had small raises and promotions for only extremely exemplary people.
And then this year, they freeze raises for their senior people. Supposedly, it doesn't affect me since I am not "senior." But after three years in a row, people are going to start asking "Why am I here?"
That sucks big time. I'm sorry.
I haven't gotten a raise in the four years I've been working at my job, but at least they don't hint that I'm going to be getting one and then deny it.
Argh. That's terribly unfair.
Books read in 2012: 21/50
It sucks, but I'm glad to know we're not in this boat alone. I have a government job, and therefore get an incremental raise every November, but fifty cents every two weeks isn't making much of a difference around here. That doesn't cover my daily Coke (a-cola. C'mon now.) habit.
Apparently he's also been given a list of goals to meet for his re-review in April. I mean seriously?! Dave said it best "Either keep me or don't, but this is ridiculous." Back in August he was given two weeks to "clean up his act" and meet his goals or they would have to let him go. Dave has the work ethic of a freaking Puritan. He feels like he's been on the verge of losing his job for almost 6 months now. It's affecting his health, and our relationship, and I'm effing sick of it.
Big, big like the moon...
I am sorry for this stress. I have to admit, I've had a low, slow-burning anger under the surface for a coupla years now regarding my own situation. It sounds so nice on paper to say, hey we just want to make the company profitable so everyone can keep their jobs, and you know this darn economy...
In reality, it sounds patronizing, "Hey we're doing you a favor by letting you work here and not giving you a raise!" And I totally get being told one thing and then having another happen. It makes you want to scream. And yet you stuff it so that you can keep your current income.
