Free Anti-virus? If not, which one to purchase?

A friend told me that her friend (always a good start to a story right?) told her that she had gotten anti-virus online somewhere that was shareware/freeware, but she couldn't remember where she got it or the name.  Do you know of anything like this?

Assuming that it's an urban legend, what level of protection do you really need if you mostly use your laptop to post on here, FB, pay a few bills with sites that have their own protection (ex. Dish Network), a little shopping once in awhile, do a few google searches, etc?  It seems like all the major computer security programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.) come in different levels.  As the level of protection increases, so does the cost.  I don't want to be vulnerable, but I also don't want to spend $100/yr on computer security when I don't really do that much.

TIA!

  • I just noticed at the very bottom of this page there is a thread where several people recommend AVG, so that answers the first part of my question.  I still don't know how much protection I need though.  TIA!

  • Just download the free version of avg. No need to upgrade to the paid level as free level has enough protection. That's all we have on our computers (including my laptop) and all has been fine.

  • Either the AVG or see if your ISP provides one of them for download.  I know our cable company and the local DSL company do.

  • I use Avast, DH uses AVG. These in combination with Spyware Sweeper, Adaware, Malwarebytes, and other specialized scanners when needed.

  • There are a bunch of free virus protections out there. Microsoft Security is a good one, as well as what the other ladies have said.

  • If you are going to purchase - I vote: McAfee!
