Daycare question

Nolan goes to a small in-home daycare.  This is the first time she has been sick (even being pregnant!), and poor thing has been out of commission the past 2 days.  Joe's mom took the day off yesterday to take care of Nolan and I'm taking the day off today.  Talked to the provider this morning and now her husband is sick, too!  They have a 3 year old and he was sick over the weekend.  So everyone in the home has gotten this, and (knock on wood) Nolan has avoided it so far.  She will call again tonight or tomorrow morning to let us know if she can take Nolan tomorrow, except now I'm nervous that if I send him, he will then come down with it.  What's the "rule?"  If everyone in the house hasn't been sick or had a temp for 24 hours, he should be okay??    But really my question is does your daycare have a back-up for this (if they are sick but your child isn't) or do you just stay home with your child?  I don't really mind, but now we are going on a possibility of day 3.  She has a woman who comes to her house when she has dr.'s appts., but it's not like this woman can watch Nolan in our provider's home.  Just wondering what you all do in these cases.  Thanks!

Re: Daycare question

  • We are in the same boat and so far, when she hasn't been available we have had to find alternate DC. A few times my mom has taken him, I have taken a day off, my MIL has come, etc. Last Thursday, for example, she called and her son needed emergency surgery, so we were scrambling. Luckily we had a snow day, but DH was going to bring Luke to work in the am. hahaha.. I think its the downside to in home DC.

  • We use a small in-home too and if someone is sick I stay home with Josh...Knock on wood, he has done really well this winter and not gotten sick yet (hasn't even ccaught the NASTY bug I have) that said our sitter doesn't have a "spare" person to watch kids so if She or her kids are sick I'm home or Rick is.

I would say that if everyone has been fever free for 24 hours you should be all set.

  • We have the same situation.  If daycare provider is sick one of us stays home with Ben.  Her husband watches the kids for short periods of time if she has an appointment or something, but if she is sick the kids don't go.  She has a tiny house so I wouldn't want him there anyway since he would have to be around her.
  • If it's the noro virus, they are saying 48 hrs after symptoms resolve (at least that's what our hospital is saying for employees to be able to return back to work)

  • Hmm, I guess I never thought of this because our in-home has three providers so if one is sick, I guess the other two just take over.  They have never had a sick day.  That said, the rule is that kids must be fever free for 24 hours before they can return to daycare.  I guess I would assume the same rule for the providers.  If this ever happened, I guess I would stay home with Ridley.

  • This was a big reason we went with a larger center- I didn't want to deal with the place being closed for sickness- like in My Cousin Vinny with the dry cleaning shop!

But their rules are 24 with no fever (and unmedicated) and 12 hours barf-free for varying illnesses.  In your case, it would probably come down to money... if I was paying for the days, I'd bring him in.  If I didn't have to pay the provider and could afford the time off, I might give it an extra day to really let the illness clear the air.  But then again, if the other kids go back while you avoid an extra day, the germs will still be around with the other paying kids.

  • I don't deal with this because I am a DCP. That being said, my daycare is in the basement so that if DS or I were sick (l have only had to take one day for myself with the stomach flu) my coverage can still run the daycare and it doesn't affect my families.

My rule is the 24 hour rule... fever & vomiting.

  • When DCP or kids have been sick either one of us stays home, I try to get my mom or MIL to come, or we have a daycare up the street from us that I use as a last possible option (they're not bad, but it just wouldn't be my first choice).  We don't pay for days he isn't there, so it's not too big of a deal.  He and DCP's little girl pretty much share all their bugs with each other every time, so I really don't worry that much about it anymore unless one of them is super sick.  It's like his second family at this point, so there's not much sense in keeping Marcus home if it's just a cold or a mild fever.
