noise reducers on a city apt. balcony?

I was thinking of putting in some planters on the balcony of our new apt. to help reduce noise.

Do you think I could do it with bamboo like this?

Any other suggestions are welcome!

Re: noise reducers on a city apt. balcony?

  • I hate to say it, but I don't think a 1-2 foot deep planting of anything is going to significantly reduce noise.  I mean, the noise barriers on highways are multiple feet thick of concrete.

However, they will provide additional privacy & look nice!

  • from a WaPo article

But noticing noise might be as much psychological as physical. When you don't see the source of the sound, there's an implied screening that makes it less apparent. So the use of plantings between you and the noise at any width is valuable for most home landscapes. That's also a good reason to install something to try to camouflage noise. Installing a fountain, music and screening might further contribute to a quieter yard.

I guess I just want to know if planting this type of bamboo in a narrow box planter is feasable.  And if it's not what is another tall plant that I could use?

  • Yes, it's feasible especially if you are getting the clumping (not running) bamboo. The clumping bamboo (sorry, I can't remember the proper name) doesn't grow quite as aggressively and would probably do better in a container.

As for suggestions of other plants, we'd need more info on the kind of light your balcony gets...only morning sun, no sun, only afternoon sun, sun all day long, etc.

  • What about a water feature?  PIB of mine.

Total afternoon sun and I live on Oahu.

We just moved here and I know NOTHING about native plants.  I don't really know much about plants where I'm from much less here.

Trust me, we're going to add that too!

It's an absolutely fantastic apt. Probably the worst feature is how close we are to the freeway.

You could probably also do something like potted palms or a trellis with a flowering vine.

If you don't get better suggestions on here, you may want to seek out a good local nursery & see what they have available.

  • I have a solar fountain from QVC that I absolutely love...it would definitely get rid of some noise!
