Taco Bell Beff, thoughts?

Did you hear on the news about the TB lawsuit and that the beef isn't really much beef?

I feel sick thinking about it. I mean, I know it is pretty much a known fact about all fast food 'meat' but I just don't want to think about it! I don't eat much fast food thankfully but I did like me some Taco Supremes here and there!

Makes me want to go back to vegetarian, I did it for 6 months once after a book I read totally grossed me out. But unfortunately now might not be a good time for me to make the switch

  • I'll be honest. I really don't understand the shock/outrage at this news story.  Did anyone really think they were eating real, 100% beef? Look at the prices of ground beef in the grocery store!  A taco is, what, $0.69 a Taco Bell? Of course it's not all beef.

I don't know. I read the ingredients list and nothing really surprised me.  I'm guessing this is no worse than the majority of processed/prepackaged crap people eat every day anyway, ya know?

well said. taco bell is like spam for me...i don't know what's in it but damn it's tasty.

  • Steph, I'm with you on that. I mean, look at the ingredients list for just about anything in your cupboard or icebox. Unless it's labels "organic," Mother Nature had help.

At least it an oat derivative and not, I don't know, silicone or something. I'll still eat it as often as I always do, two or three times a year. Soooooooooooo not a Taco Bell fan.

  • I'll be honest: I love Taco Bell.  I don't eat hamburger of any kind, BUT, I'm fairly certain that the stuff in their cheesy bean and rice burritos, and the chicken in their quesadillas, isn't 100% natural either.  Neither is any of the other food in my house, except for the stuff that says organic.  (I do like to buy organic, but H never bothers to on his shopping trips).

I don't worry too much about it.

  • I think most people have known it isn't all beef for quite sometime.  Anyone who did think it was all beef needs to have a home cooked meal a little more often.

  • I was more upset about the fact that it had allergens in it that probably need to be displayed more clearly. Folks like me, who can't eat gluten, may assume the "meaty" aspect of their taco is safe (Yes, I have eaten one of their tacos before thinking it was GF back in my early days of trying to figure out what I could and could not eat). I always appreciate how places like Wendy's will give you some clue as to what they put in their stuff.

That said, now that I am a little older and more savvy about my own restrictions, no I am not surprised their beef is barely beef. So I am not so much outraged as just sort of like... gee, it would be nice if they considered how difficult it is for people who really need to know what they're eating.

I think people will food allergies need to take responsibility for that, though.  I mean. I've done WW for awhile, and I've never gotten annoyed that the points aren't displayed on every menu.  If I decide to go out to eat somewhere, I'll check the menu ahead of time. Same with the GF thing, now that I'm trying to stay GF (my doctor hasn't tested me officially, but we're both in agreement it's probably causing a lot of my migraines and stomach issues.)  But I've never gotten annoyed that someone isn't telling me what is or isn't acceptable for me to eat.

I don't think those with the allergy should give up the responsibility. It's just very difficult at times when you are say, in the middle of nowhere with limited options to eat (like where my sister lives or say, on a road trip). I've always taken note of the restaurants willing to offer allergy information and stuck with them if I can find them if they are around. With allergies like gluten, it can be very very tough to avoid contamination even when you are quite thorough (I'd say on average, I end up exposed every six months). So yeah, while I don't think Taco Bell should be sued for that, but I also think that Taco Bell needs to realize we live in a time when people are really pushing to know what's in their food for a variety of reasons.
