Any hair-care experts?

So, my hair is super thick (and currently pretty long - midback length) and even though it's straight, it's always been fairly course.

I don't blow dry my hair (except maybe twice a year) and I only ever use a flat iron or any heat at all, on my bangs.  I also don't use any product.  And, I don't color my hair.

So, here's my problem.  The top, sort of layer (for lack of a better term) is just always sort of dry and frizzy.  Any ideas on what I could put on it that would make it look healthier?

Right now, I use Panteen for thick straight hair.  The underside of my hair is totally healthy and pretty.  But the top looks like I take a flat iron to it 20 times a day, every day.  What gives?

Any ideas or tips?

P.S.  I never had this problem until about 10 years ago, once I hit my mid-early 20's.

  • I'm no expert, but it sounds like we have pretty similar thick hair.  I love a product by Kiehls called "Heat protective silk straightening cream".  It's about $20 a tube, but my last tube lasted about 8 months.

I do dry my hair a couple times a week and flat iron everyday, but I think this would also work nicely just for taming frizziness.

  • I am also no expert but I love morrocan oil! It doesn't make your hair oily but it helps it look healthy
  • I have long, thick hair that can get really frizzy. I have found that the less I wash my hair the less frizzy it tends to get. I only wash it once or twice a week and then I put an anti-frizz creme on it when it is still wet. I also have a anti-frizz hairspray for when its very humid and my hair freaks out.

No, there are Kiehls stores and you can often find their stuff at cosmetics counters. I looked in Oklahoma City and they carry Kiehls at the Dillards in the Penn Square Mall.

  • Question: Did you move about 10 years ago?  I notice huge changes in my hair when I move due to the different types of water.  If the water isn't treated as well (meaning there are more minerals in it) my hair is so much frizzier and tangled (I have naturally VERY curly hair).  I don't have a solution to this, I just dealt with it.  So glad I live in a city with good water again!

I've lived in 4 different places, all with different water sources, over the past 10+ years.  But that is a good idea.

  • I have a similar problem. I use Biosilk serum after I shower. I just put a dime full and put in on my hair wet, I notice a huge difference if I forget to use it. I think it really helps with my hair being frizzy and course. Sometimes I even blow dry my hair and put a 1/2 dime full on it if it is a little more frizzier than normal.
