Storing digital photos

I'm sure this gets asked all the time, but how do you store your digital photos? I am 100% (okay, 99%) computer illiterate. I currently put all of my digital photos onto my hard drive, then occassionally burn them onto a CD. If I'm not mistaken, it's best for me to purchase an external hard drive to store the pictures on, back them up to an online storage site, and burn them to a CD. How often should I be doing this (backing up and putting on CD)? I'm afraid that once I get them onto a CD I'll never be able to find them again. How do you organize them on the CD? By date? Event? How do you know how many pictures it will hold?

My computer is backed up nightly by Mozy's remote storage service.  I also use an external hard drive.  This is also synced daily.  I would suggest organizing on CDs, an external hard drive in the exact same way you currently organize on your computer...unless that's not working for you.

  • High volume hard drive in a safe deposit box for absolutely irreplaceable photos-wedding, honeymoon, family photos, etc.
  • I have every single one on an external hard drive.  I dont have it backed up anywhere or on a cd.

I have them organized various ways. Main folders labeled by the person's name or main event.  For the people, for example, one folder for DH, one for my niece, one for DD, each one of the dogs has a separate folder, etc.) and then they are organized by year and then by month within each year.

The folders for events all have subfolders in them, too. For example, the Weddings folder is subdivided by the specific person's name, Holidays is subdivided by name of the holiday, etc.

It took quite a bit of time to get it all organized but once it's done it's so easy to reference.
