Lucille, Claire and any other cruisers

What type of cabin do you get?

We had a suite for our honeymoon and I'm not sure I would want anything else. We're looking at a cruise in October and are planning on a suite again. I really liked having a balcony and getting on and off the ship first.

Re: Lucille, Claire and any other cruisers

  • The cheapest. I don't plan on spending a ton of time in there.

If the upgrade fairy called me today & said $100 to upgrade to a balcony, I totally would.

  • We did portholes, but only because it was the cheaper than an interior or I would have done that.

H and I got a balcony on our HM and it was nice and all, but the price jump wasn't justified by how little time we spent on the balcony.  I'd rather be out and about!  Plus I liked the interior being pitch black so we could sleep in.

But I don't know if I'm the best person to listen to because I'd rather go on as many vacations as possible as cheaply as possible.  We can basically have a good time anywhere and the time away is more important to me than having a balcony or (insert other amenity/luxury).

  • That makes sense. We did spend a lot of time in our room and on the balcony. I loved getting up and watching as we came into port. Honestly, the thought of an interior room freaks me out. I like having a window. The price difference between an Ocean View and Suite isn't huge for the cruise we're looking at so I guess we'll stick with suite.

All of this for me too.  Sorry, I know, the dreaded this... but you worded it so well!

  • After having both an interior room and a room with a big window, I will never do the interior again. I get claustrophobic and I really liked being able to see daylight for not too much more money. A balcony would be nice, but I'm usually out and about too. I would do it if it wan't a big jump in price though.

  • We are also in the cheapest room available boat. (hehe. boat.) We got a free upgrade to an oceanview room last time, and it was nice and all, but i'd rather use the extra money on drinks and excursions. the only thing I didn't like about the interior room was how it was pitch black in the morning and you had no sense of if it was 7 am or noon. I imagine a suite with a balcony would be nice, but there are plenty of places on those boats to hang out and watch the ocean, it's just not my top priority for my money. we travel a lot so we have to save money whereever we can.
  • We've been in pretty much every category but a suite.  I can't justify spending all that money on a suite when I could take 2 cruises with that amount.

This upcoming cruise, we were originally booked in a porthole because it was so cheap, but we got an awesome upsell to an oceanview.  We paid about $300 less than what a current interior room is going for.

    I do love balconies though.

  • I've had the suite with the balcony before (actually on the same ship we're about to go on) & honestly, its cool for about 5 minutes.  We had drinks there when we got onboard, then a drink there before dinner & that was about it.  Too many other things to do.

  • I have only stayed in an interior room. Being pitch black does have its down falls.

My roommate and I in college went on a cruise and got trashed pretty early so we went back to the room and passed out. She woke me up at 3 freaking out because we were missing all the sun. We put our bath suits on and ran to the pool deck just to realize we are assholes and it was 3 AM. It would have been nice to have a porthole at that moment.

I meant to respond to this last night, but I was too busy laughing.  Seriously loled for like five minutes.

That is hilarious! I would probably do the same thing.

  • I just looked at the price difference between the suite we were looking at and a porthole room (which I haven't looked at before). It's an $860 difference. I mentioned it to DH and I think we may consider going that route. If we don't like that kind of cabin we can always go back to a suite next time. I'm thinking like pp mentioned, that's a lot of excursions and booze.

Another thing that I hadn't taken into consideration is MIL and SIL are coming too (in their own cabin) so H and I probably won't be spending as much time in our cabin as we did on our honeymoon. It's their first cruise and they'll want to go and do all kinds of stuff.

We're not booking for a few more weeks b/c I still have to get the time off approved and we're holding out for a good deal like we got last time. Thank you for the insight.

  • Whoa, that's a big difference.  For me at least.  I would definitely go with the cheaper option!

Do you know what ship you're going on?  I can help you find these secret (well, at least they were to me until the last cruise!) rooms that are the same price as an interior, but have portholes.

  • $800?! Yeah, I'd definitely downgrade.

That's a whole other cruise for us.

That would be awesome, it's the Carnival Elation.

R1 through 31 and M1 through 30 SHOULD be the same price as an interior, but they're usually bigger and they have a porthole.

I'm going to check that out. I'll get back to you, thank you! If I go the Early Saver and not Past Guest it let's me select those cabins and it tells me it's a porthole room. It is cheaper to go that route than the past guest option but it doesn't have "upgrades", whatever they may be.

  • I think we're going to go with the porthole room. It will be $1207 before prepaid gratuities.

Thank you, Lucille for the porthole room help.

Yay, I'm glad I could help! I was stoked when I discovered that option on the last cruise. You can kind of see in the deck plan that some rooms are a little longer than others. Those are worth trying to book because the extra foot or two of space makes a big difference when you're in such tight quarters. :)
