married in DC, live in NC, tax help!!!!
My wife and I were married in Washington DC, but live in North Carolina. Not sure what to do about taxes, because DC is a federal territory, not a state. Anyone in same boat? What are you doing?
Re: married in DC, live in NC, tax help!!!!
For federal taxes you have to file single. They do not recognize same-sex marriage at all.
For state taxes it will depend on your state. Since NC doesn't recognize same-sex marriage you will have to file single as well.
For federal taxes you can file single (or perhaps head of household if you have a qualifying child or relative living with you). For tax purposes, getting married in DC is just like getting married in another state. It (unfortunately) doesn't affect your federal tax filing status.
I'm not familiar with NC taxes, but I would assume your filing status would be the same as your federal taxes unless they have a special domestic partners status like in DC.
