Mac ? regarding empyting trash on desktop

I have an iMac, and got it when XH and I were married and he set it all up. It was my primary computer but he used it too and had a login for it as well.

I am currently logged in under my name, and I want to empty the trash, but it says I don't have the right permissions to do that. Is there anything I can do? Basically it won't empty ANY of the trash, and it has been like this since I left XH, so 2 years now. I would really like to be able to get rid of things, but I can't.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

  • Are you an admin account? System Preferences --> Accounts.

Thanks. I will check that out.

Also, I *think* I know XH's password, so I could try that if that fails.

I think that's the first thing I would try, actually.  Then you can change yourself to be the administrator.

  • When the error pops up, does it tell you a specific file that it can't delete? The only times I've had problems with emptying the trash is when there are a few files marked "read only". If it tells you the file name, find that file in the finder window. Right click, and look at the properties. Down the bottom of that window, there should be a Permissions section. Change it from "Read Only" to "read and write". Then it should allow you to delete it for good.
