Intro and a ?

Hi everyone! I am new here, though I'm on the Bump ALL the time! I am just getting started with gardening and will prob be around lurking and asking a few questions.

My first question is about composting though....does anyone here do it? Can I set up my SoilSaver and start now even though its winter (I live in NW Indiana)? Do you use your compost for flower gardens also or just veggie gardens? Thanks!

Re: Intro and a ?

  • You're way ahead of us by having a container, we just have a heap, lol.  We do throw stuff into it during the winter, but I haven't been out to turn it over since it's been so cold (we're in NE Ohio), so I don't know how much usable compost I'll have by spring.  I wouldn't expect people to save their compostable material during the winter, so I see no reason why you couldn't start now.  Even if it's too cold to break down and it just lays frozen for a while (although with the black container you have it should heat up), you'll build up a good pile to start with when things thaw out.
  • Yay! Exactly the excuse I need to pull it out of the box and put it together tonight  Big Smile

  • I add to my compost pile during the winter, yes.

And I do use compost for both edibles & non-edibles.

  • If done correctly, the materials/compost will heat itself despite any outside temperatures. So I would say it doesn't matter when you start
