LGBT-friendly tax software/website?

I'm trying to decide which online tax preparation website to use to file our taxes this year. Has anyone had good or bad experiences? I'm considering turbo tax or tax act. The main advantage to turbo tax seems to be the ability to file returns for multiple people, which is what I'm looking for. My main concern is being able to file single for both of us federally and married in DC without having to create a separate account and re-enter a whole bunch of information. Has anyone done that with turbo tax?

I have done our taxes myself for years but I'm tired of having to use multiple websites to manage it b/c one of our incomes is too high to free file. In the past, I've spent hours trying out different ways to split credits between us. But we bought a house this year and will have to itemize for the first time. I really don't want to have to deal with that by hand.

Re: LGBT-friendly tax software/website?

  • Sorry, I have no experience with tax software.  With two houses, two different states, and a SSM we hire someone :-p

  • Sorry, I don't know either.  We both file single for state (and federal obviously), so we each just do our own.
  • We use turbo tax and have had no problems. File as civil unioned for state and individually for federal.

  • We use TruboTax. It does help you file your married state return, your federal return seperately. Also, in Iowa we have to send in a 'fake' as if we were married federal and mail it in as well.TurboTax helps us with all of this. I don't remember julie ever complaining about having to reenter a bunch of information.

  • I've downloaded Turbo Tax and will report back with a review. Thanks for the help!
  • We got married in CT and live in NYC.  New York won't allow us to file state returns together and I don't think any same-sex married couple is able to file a federal return together.

     Am I wrong about that?

Even if NY allowed us to file together I'm not sure if we would have done it if filing as a single person was still an option, since she makes more money and I would not have gotten the $600+ refund that I got.  Of course "married, filing as single" seems like a bad route from what I've heard.

The upside to not being able to file together is that I was able to avoid claiming my wife's income on my law school's loan repayment program application (once I told them we had to file as single they approved that).

You are not wrong.  According to NY State law your file status for the state has to be the same as whatever you file for the feds. FWIW, our tax man worked did the math to see if we would be better off filing married (if legally allowed) and the answer was no. So for us it benefits to file single.
