Happy Friday!!

Do you have a lot of friends that are of a different race than you?

Re: QOTD-Friday

  • Pretty decent mix.. the town I grew up in was kind of a landing point for immigrant families, so there were a lot of nationalities. What was fun is that because most of the kids my age were the first generation to be born in the US, they had a lot of customs/traditions from their parents' countries that I got to see. My church actually changed to Vietnamese/English bilingual when I was about 12, which just rocked my socks. Vietnamese Catholicism is way cooler. haha

  • In high school, I grew up in a very WASP-y area, however my immediate tight group of friends consisted of a Taiwanese girl, a Jewish/Mexican girl, a half Jewish girl, a black guy, my 'gay boyfriend' and me. I was the minority in the group!

Then in college, I went to a small, private Lutheran school in NC, and it was all white, Christian girls - much different!

  • It is a good mix. It was not as mixed growing up.
  • Growing up moreso than now.  I grew up in the melting pot that is l.a. and went to private schools that were still accessible to having a diverse ethnic mix.  Since then I have gravitated more to people with latin backgrounds or are white...not by design or on purpose.  That's just what I tally now that I'm going through my close friends in my head.

  • No, not really.  Not intentionally or anything, I just don't get out much these days :)

  • Not really, mostly because I haven't had the opportunity. In Brewton growing up we had white kids and African American kids. There really wasn't much else. Then I was as culturally diverse as I could be. Now, I have a Japanese friend and mostly white friends.

  • Growing up I had a lot more friends of different races than I do now.  I grew up an Army brat and moving every 2.5 year exposed me to a ton of different people and cultures.

ETA: DH grew up in Idaho and was 10 years old before he met someone who was black.  I found this really strange when he told me that.

I was born in a very small town in PA... think one red light small. I did not meet anyone of a diffrent race until we moved to MD in the 3rd grade.

  • Growing up, yes. Now, not as much. Like pp, I don't get out much. You guys are pretty much my peer group, and DH has a set of friends that are all WASC, which is pretty par for the course for Massachusetts.
  • I did growing up, I was a Navy brat and like Kristin, we moved every few years and I was exposed to a lot of different races and religions.

Now, I just don't get out much.  Several of my co-workers are Indian and I interact with them daily, obviously, but most (not all) of our friends are caucausian.. not sure why, no reason, just worked out that way.
