S/O Horizon - other questionable organic brands

I was surprised to read about Horizons poor business practices/animal welfare in the post below.  I just assumed that if it was organic, because they cared about the actual product, they would care about the animal.  Guess I was wrong to assume!

Is there a list out there somewhere of organic brands to avoid? Currently I buy the WF 365 brand organic milk.  Any issues with their store brand?  Any websites with back up info would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

  • The Cornucopia Institute does a report on various dairy companies and rates them. I don't believe Whole Foods brand scored very well.

  • Thanks, I'll check it out.  There's so much info out there and I feel like I really need to educate myself better so that I can make the best choices for my and my husband.

  • The nice thing for you is that living in PA, you should have some different choices if you look hard enough.  Have you looked at Local Harvest to see of any local farmers that might be able to give you locally raised, non-conventional goods?  They might not all be certified organic because that process is very expensive, but some farmers may use organic methods of farming.

This is what we do also.  We shop at the Farmer's Market which has pretty much everything we need.  Our farmers aren't organic b/c they can't afford the certification, but most of them don't spray or spray very little.  The dairy laws in VA are incredible, so I haven't found a source for local milk.  I buy the Organic Valley brand at WF, which is a cooperative of small, local organic dairy farms.  I believe the Cornicopia Institute rated them highly.
