So my husband is 31...

and has high cholesterol... how the hell does that happen??? And I'm the opposite, my cholesterol is abnormally low for someone of my age. What does he need to avoid/change/etc. my all knowing nesties

Re: So my husband is 31...

  • Sometimes it's hereditary. My friend is otherwise healthy: thin, eats well and very active but got her mom's high cholesterol. He could try cutting out saturated fats (animal-derived) and replacing them with good fats: olive oil, avocado and nuts are examples. Also add whole grains, as they can help lower cholesterol. Fiber stir-ins (Benefiber, etc.) also can help flush it out of the system. Exercise raises the good cholesterol, which can help combat the bad. Would he consider seeing a nutritionist? If not, there are lots of good books on the topic.

No one in his family has high choloesterol, so I'm not sure where it comes from. I'm going to do some digging. I'm going to have him do the fiber thing, that's a great idea, and easy for him. If we weren't losing our insurance on Tuesday I'd have him see a nutrionist, but it's just too expensive :O( And I'm going to try and start dragging him to Zumba with me... the effort to fight me should get him into shape bahahah

    Thank you for the tips!!!

  • Plain oatmeal (not butter, etc) is one of the best things for lowering cholesterol and check into fish oils..Omega 3's.

  • baked oatmeal is another good way to get him to eat oatmeal for the fiber, I just made some last night and DH really liked it but won't usually eat regular oatmeal.  You can use pumpkin or applesauce instead of the oils.  Flax seed can also be added into recipes and help cholesterol, I haven't found it at our regular stores to try it yet...

  • Aren't cheerio's supposed to lower cholesterol? I might be making that up, not sure.
