BFing Mommas I got a ?

Hi ladies,

So I have been sick all week and just riding it out with tylenol. I took one sudafed on Tuesday night and my supply when I pumped on wednesday was down significantly so I stopped taking anything. But I can't handle the coughing fits at night. I literally coughed for 2 hours straight last night when I laid down to go to bed. Then I coughed through out the night periodically. I am sore, my throat is raw and I am exhausted.

Can I take a cough medicine that is safe for nursing and won't effect my supply?

I wish I could have gone to the doc this week but no sick days or vacation days yet with my new job so I have been toughing it out. :(

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

(Thankfully my pedi does sick visits on the weekends bc I will be there with Will later this morning for his cough. Poor guy. We do tandem coughing fits. :( Boo for winter colds!!! )

  • I found that drinking warm milk helped me if you dont want to take any medicine.

  • sudafed dehydrates you, double your water intake. I talked to my dr when I was having a similar issue while BFing and lack of sleep/stress can affect your supply as well. He recommended sudafed only at night and to take it with 2 HUGE glasses of liquid. GL! and I hope you feel better.
  • Nik--i ditto Amy with Kellymom.com  there is a list on there of what you cna take...I forget what it is called but there is something in some of the medicines that dehydrate you and will tank your suuply...if you can find what that is you can look at the ingredients to see what ones don't have it...or call your pharmacy.  That happened to me with Lilly and I want to say I was able to take regular plain robitussin (sp?) or one of those plain regular ones...once it says it does anything to clear you passages it will drain your supply...i wish i could remember what i took...but between Kellymom and CVS I found something to help.
  • I had a terrible cough earlier this month just like you described!  It was so bad when I went to bed, and my throat was killing me.  I asked on FB, and there were various things recommended to me.  I took 300 mg of Motrin and ate two tablespoon of honey.  The honey definitely helped.  I did that for a few days, and it seemed to get better after that.  Oh, I also gargled with warm salt water (gross) once every hour one night.  If you go on my FB wall you can check out what people had suggested, it was on 1/12.  I definitely stayed away from the decongestants so my already poor milk supply wouldn't dry up and leave me with nothing!  Hope you feel better soon!
  • Thank you ladies! I am going to try the motrin & honey plus gargling to see if that helps. If I need to resort to something I will go with what Kelly Mom suggests.

I don't know why I always forget about kellymom.  Dope.
