PHR Certification

Anyone here taken the PHR certification test?  I have a bachelor's in HR and have worked in HR for a couple of years and am considering taking it.  My boss said she didn't think it was to helpful to the HR professionals she knows but I wanted to see what everyone else's thoughts were.  I work in state government so maybe it would be more helpful in the private sector??

Thanks for any advice!:)

Re: PHR Certification

  • I will be taking it in June and just ordered my study book for it. A lot of the job postings I look at ask about the PHR certification.
  • I know when we were looking for a HR Manager for my company (privately owned), we wanted someone who had the PHR certification. It never hurts to have a certification that promotes your knowledge in your job field.

    Good luck on the exam!

  • I think it helps in the private sector when you're job searching.  If you're planning on staying where you are and they don't see any value in it, I'd say wait to take it.  If you are planning on leaving shortly to potentially go to a company who may see some value then do it.

I think it can't ever hurt to prove to yourself you have that knowledge but if you're doing it for a raise it sounds like that isn't going to happen.

  • I took the PHR in 2004 to complete my MA in HR.  I took the prep course and it required a lot of studying as i felt the largest section was based on something i did not have experience in: Labor Laws.  I have recertified twice b/c I NEVER want to take the exam again so when you pass, please ensure you track your expiration dates!  GL!

  • I have not taken it, but I work at a consulting Firm and it is usually considered a plus. I would say it depends on your career plans, if you plan on jumping around a bit to different companies, then I would recommend it, if not, then it depends how important it is to you.
