XP: What food to serve at a small, casual baby shower?
My college friend and I are throwing a baby shower for a fellow alum. There will probably be a dozen or so women there. Very
casual. The mom-to-be lives far away so we will probably ask people to
send large gifts directly so that she doesn't have to lug gifts home on
the plane. There will be wine for those of us who aren't pregnant.
But
we are kind of stumped on what to serve for food that would be fun and
easy.
Any ideas? Links to any sources welcome.
Re: XP: What food to serve at a small, casual baby shower?
I went to a very nice desserts only shower at 3 on a Sunday. It made for a gorgeous buffet.
Fruit tart, assorted cheesecakes, petit fours, baby bootie chocolate covered cookies, caramels, cupcakes with blue icing. Unless one of the hostesses was a pastry chef, I'm pretty sure almost everything came from a bakery. Nothing easier than buying everything! (And it's reasonably affordable if you're co-hosting and can split the costs.)

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
The big questions- what time of day? what does the mom want? are there foods she is avoiding (sushi, lunchmeat)? Is she diabetic?
Under normal circumstances I would love tarheels suggestion, but I've got gestational diabetes. It would suck not to be able to eat at my shower.
Mom is very easy-going. I know if we serve food that we like, she'll be pleased. It'll be afternoon in March.
Oh wow. Love the idea of the desserts but there'll be people there that are traveling quite far, so I would definitely want to serve something a bit more substantive. (Although, we are planning on doing more than one kind of dessert!).
Just trying to think of things that can be made easily (ahead of time) and not too fussy.
My first thoughts: deviled eggs topped with smoked salmon,
Prosciutto wrapped asparagus- this is easy to do ahead

a pasta salad of some sort, I love this recipe

For a "main" it sort of depends on what direction you want to go. You could do something hot- a spiral ham, some grilled flat iron steak and chicken breast sliced thin, or individual stuffed chicken breasts. You could also go a more traditional route- chicken/ham/egg salad, tortilla wraps.
Another thought might be just to do one huge salad bar- lettuces and spinach, cheese, egg, cucumber, tomato, olive, chick peas, black beans, peas, chicken, salmon, beef, bacon, sunflower seeds, croutons, etc.
