So, we all know I'm in grad school. I graduate in 15 weeks (who's counting though, right?).
Here's the problem. Budget cuts. It is hitting education HARD. We received an email from our superintendent yesterday. The short of it is this:
hiring freeze (no new hires and vacant positions will not be filled)
no pay raise
bigger classroom size (more students per class)
no layoff's thankfully as they can make up the deficit by the retirees and hiring freeze
What does that mean for me? It means even though my diag. retires in December, her position will not be filled and they will simply have a current diag take our school. Most diag.'s have 2 schools each right now. They most likely will have 3 next year.
I've been conflicted as to whether I really want to be a diag. anyway honestly. So, maybe this is God's way of telling me, "not right now". I've been conflicted because it would be hard to go into that new position if I were pregnant because having maternity leave in that position is HARD because there's so much work. It would be awful to come back after 6 weeks.
I am content with teaching SPED math at the moment but I don't see myself doing it forever.
Ideally in my dreams, DH's store and Scentsy would bring us enough money I could quit. Realistically, I'll be teaching a year or two or more.
Ugh, I hate our economy and that I've been making virtually the same amount of money since I started teaching and am looking at a pay DECREASE next year (no pay raise and I'm sure health insurance will go up = less pay).
I should be thankful I have a job though right?!

Do you have a teaching union down there/are you a member? The end of the year always sees a very tense time for my SIL up here because the teacher's union always fights for raises and to keep insurance rates the same and it always looks like it's going to end badly...but then it works out in the end.
ITA with Nicole...you definitely deserve a raise. But, not being laid off is about just as good in today's economy. Will you automatically get a raise for completing your masters, even if you don't change jobs?
Yes, we have a union and I'm a member. I have no idea what they do, lol! What an awesome member I am! I basically joined because they would provide me with a lawyer should I need one and in SPED - you just never know!
I will get a raise in May for completing my master's and that's it. My job is pretty secure. I just won't get to move into the diag. position. In a way - I'm kind of relieved.
There are only 2 SPED teachers on our campus because we don't have any of the units where our most severe kids are (kind of hard to have them when we are an outside campus). Anyway, I've been there 4 years and the other teacher 2. So, if they downsized us, she would go first. However, it is HIGHLY unlikely they would take either of us. They'll start consolidating at other school's who have more units first.
It just sucks for everyone. I don't want anyone to leave!

Ugh - that kinda sounds like OSU. For awhile this year, they were talking about forcing us into furloughs. That would've sucked. And, for the second year in a row, no pay raises. But, I AM grateful I have a job, that's for sure.
That whole situation definitely sucks though. Sigh.

My mom works for the state and she has had forced furloughs for the last two years. Our school system is in trouble too, this economy sucks the big one. And raising my hand, another one here who has gone about two years without a raise.
Glad that you're job will be safe!
Just a curiousity, Right now I work in a job that definitely DOES NOT need my designation nor does it pay like it does. (In fact I am thinking about dropping it, but that's a whole 'nother story.) so could you just finish your masters and then not worry about the job. Or just go for the job you like where it does or does not use you masters? I know you probably will anyway.... But just thought I'd mention it.
I like my new job alot and my designation, well, it just doesn't fit where my life is going right now and the new job has been well worth it...
Anyway, hope that makes sense.
