If you've had teeth pulled...

So, I'm going to get braces.  Don't laugh!  I've had my molds done and my next step before the braces get put on is to have 4 teeth pulled.  Ya'll, I'm terrified!!!  I've had my wisdom teeth pulled, but I was put to sleep.  I won't be put to sleep for this.  I have to see it.  And hear it.  Ahhhhhh!!!!

Has anybody had teeth pulled that can tell me how bad it is?

I've had teeth pulled. Two molars. It really wasn't that bad, as long as the numbing works. The first dentist who tried to pull one just shot novacaine down my throat instead of actually getting it into the gums.... I was 10? maybe? She ended up leaving the tooth in because she was an idiot. 

Then it (and the other tooth) got pulled when I got braces in HS. With the novacaine working... all you felt was some pressure. So it really wasn't bad. They have the suction thing in there most of the time, so you rarely taste blood. Which is the gross part for me. 

But seriously, just dont let them start if you're not numb. It's not bad at all, at least for me it wasn't.

Agreed, make sure you are assertive and don't let them start if you aren't numb.  If you're numb, it's a bit of pressure but it's not bad.

The novacaine needle hurt more than the tooth being pulled.  I had to have a tooth pulled before I got braces, too (I had them as a young teenager).

Seriously.  I'm telling you it's not bad, and I have a serious dental phobia (as in, I have to be numbed in order for them to clean my teeth without me jumping out of my seat).

I have not had teeth pulled (other than wisdom when I was knocked out like you), but I had to have a tissue transplant where I had to be awake.  I agree with the other girls, make sure you are good and numb.  And if you are afraid of the needles for the Novocain ask if they have the rub on stuff to use first.  I'm a wimp with needles and that definitely helped me so I couldn't feel the first couple of needles. 

Also of course bring your iPod and try to get into your "happy" place before they start or at least once you are numb.

I had 5 teeth pulled before I had my braces put on, but they put me under a twilight sedation. So I was really asleep but I was out of it. I remember hearing the teeth come out and then them saying it was all done. I would use an Ipod while having it done so you aren't focusing on all the noises. I think my recovery time was about 5 days until I felt a 100%.

Ok, thank you so much ladies!!  I'm glad to hear that it's not as bad as I've been imagining it to be.  I was totally shocked when the orthodontist said that he would put my braces on 3-5 days later.  I was all let my poor mouth heal man!

I think I had mine put on a month or two later, it was forever ago now so I don't really remember.

Yeah.... normal people get to get theirs when they're teenagers.  I get to be a tin grin in my mid-twenties.  Awesome!  The good news is that they have clear wires and brackets now so it won't be as bad as it could have been.

I have known many adults who had the clear wires and brackets and they really not that noticeable at all. To be honest, I think I will need a retainer or those clear ones again soon. My teeth have started to move apart and my braces have been off since I was 18, so almost 8 years.

My sister wears her retainer pretty religiously and she says that if she doesn't wear it for a couple of nights that she notices that her teeth have moved.  I am just so ready to have a pretty smile.  I am so self conscious about mine.

Make sure you are numb and you are good to go... that being said...I've had braces 2--yes two times--once as teen, and the other as an adult, so no laughter here. I think it is great you are taking care of you.

I have had teeth pulled before. It was not too bad, especially if you are numbed up.

oh I also forgot.  I had braces as a teen, and now 12yrs later or so my teeth are getting bad again.  it is mostly my bottom teeth, and probably because I tend to "clench" my jaw due to anxiety.  I am thinking that I might think about them in my 30's.  we'll see.

It's really not that bad, and saliva has healing enzymes in it, so your mouth will heal very quickly from the extractions. Just avoid straws, cigs, anything you have to suck  for the first few days, and you'll be good to go!

My mom got braces when she was 40.  I have known lots of adults who got braces in adulthood.  The clear ones are so much better than the old ones.  I will say I had a great Ortho though because my teeth are still great and I got mine off 25 years ago LOL.  Good Luck, it will be so worth it!

not that bad at all!  i promise.  the Novocain injection is the worst part.

 

and i dont laugh at braces...i fixed my teeth for the wedding, though i did invisalign.

I tried to do Invisalign before the wedding, but my teeth are too bad.  Awesome for me right?
